A lobby group of powerful online sports betting giants including DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM are proposing legalized and regulated online sports betting in California that would benefit mental health and the homeless. A separate initiative on the ballot during California state elections in November of 2022 will be seeking approval for legal and regulated retail sports betting sites at Tribal Casinos and racetracks throughout the Golden State.

When it comes to legalizing sports betting, the Massachusetts State Legislature is a house divided. The Massachusetts State House voted 156-3 to approve legalized sports betting. However, the State Senate still needs to approve the measure for it be enacted as law and that group of lawmakers appears to be less enthused about the potential sports betting offers to be a steady revenue producer within the state's boundaries.

Canadians finally have a date set for the launch of single-sports betting across the country. The ruling federal Liberal government has set August 27 as that day. David Lametti, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, made the official announcement on the afternoon of Thursday, July 12 in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Currently, only parlay wagering is considered a legal form of sports betting under the Canadian Criminal Code.

Following third reading of Bill C-218 in the Senate of Canada on Tuesday, Canadian Senators voted heavily in favour of passing the bill which legalizes single-sports betting in the country. Once the bill is granted Royal Assent by the Governor-General’s office, which is merely a ceremonial move in the process, it officially becomes a law.

Single-sports betting in Canada has taken another giant step toward legalization. Bill C-218, known as The Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act, was passed through Canada's Senate Standing Committee on Banking, Trade, and Commerce last week and started the Third Senate Reading on Thursday, June 10th. The committee agreed to pass the bill and reported the bill to the Senate on Tuesday, June 8th without amendment. This bill would legalize single-game sports wagering, including online and mobile wagering across all of Canada.

It's the second time a bill to legalize single-sports betting has found itself in front of the Canadian Senate. A 2015 version died in the Senate when a federal election was called and there's a danger that fate could await Bill C-218.

The amended C-218 bill to legalize single-game sports betting in Canada was unanimously passed yesterday. While it feels like this is a step in the right direction, there are still some barriers blocking citizens from gaining access to comprehensive online wagering.
The amendment to the bill was passed, excluding one slight alteration that the committee of Justice and Human Rights decided to change, which would have allowed Canadians to bet on horse racing markets.
