Potential NHL Playoff Adjustments due to the US-Canada Border

Potential NHL Playoff Adjustments due to the US-Canada Border

Article posted on Tuesday 04 May - 09:03 EDT

With an average of around 6 games to go for the remainder of the 2021 NHL season, many are wondering who will clinch the final spots across the four divisions. The Stanley Cup is still a while away as we turn our attention to the postseason playoffs and all that it brings!

While most of the focus is on hockey and what will unfold in the remaining games this season, there is another issue that has been raised as a result of government regulations regarding travel.

The Maple Leafs, Oilers, and Jets have all looked quite strong this season. While many sportsbooks don’t offer great odds for those teams winning this year, those teams certainly have the quality to compete. It would be hugely disappointing if the North Division were unable to compete for whatever reason.

The Collapsing European Super League: Is There Still Hope?

The Collapsing European Super League: Is There Still Hope?

The European Super League (ESL) was supposed to be the breakaway club for top European football clubs, the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Liverpool to name a few.

The full list of Super League clubs:

  • English - Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham.
  • Spanish - Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Madrid.
  • Italian - AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus.

However, plans broke down the very next day after the featured clubs made the announcement, led by Real Madrid’s Florentino Perez. Perez has been defiant in the face of big clubs like Juventus and Manchester City dropping out, with the governing body FIFA also threatening to ban teams from their domestic leagues.

The anger and frustration at the decision to go ahead with a Super League boiled over when fans of Premier League clubs Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham held mass protests outside the relative stadiums. The announcement caused a wave of protest across Europe, as UEFA made it clear that all clubs involved would face repercussions if they were to go ahead and compete in the breakaway Super League.

But, what upset the fans so much and is the Super League really so different from the Champions League?

NHL Regular-Season Dates Postponed Due to COVID-19

As the league enters the stretch drive of regular-season play, 58 games have required rescheduling due to various COVID-19 outbreaks among the NHL's 31 teams. Over 150 players on 29 different teams have entered the NHL's COVID-19 protocols.

Do the Islanders have a shot at the Stanley Cup this year?

This is the question many hockey fans, namely Islanders fans have been asking of late. As we move towards the postseason, it looks like the Islanders are going to secure themselves a spot in the NHL Playoffs. But, do they have what it takes to clinch the title?

At Stanley Cup Futures odds of 17.00 across a variety of major online sportsbooks, they are certainly seen as a long shot. But, with the format changing this year, teams that would normally be unable to play one another due to Conference restrictions, there is certainly an opportunity for other teams to make a push for the Stanley Cup finals.

Who will miss out on the NHL postseason this year?

Who will miss out on the NHL postseason this year?

The NHL playoffs are right around the corner and it seems clear which teams will progress from the Divisions’ best—but, which fringe teams are going to progress to the postseason?

The realigned NHL divisions have meant this has been an uncharacteristic NHL regular-season by all accounts. The Stanley Cup format has also been changed as there are no Eastern and Western Conferences, which provides opportunities for more teams to push for the postseason this spring.

The new format means that the top four teams from each division will reach the postseason. This means we won’t see wild-card teams progressing in 2021. The new format could see two teams that would traditionally be in the same conference meet in the Stanley Cup Final.

The COVID-19 pandemic has done very little for most people, but this intriguing alteration to the way things are set up is certainly a welcomed change by many NHL fans.

While this all sounds very good in theory, teams still need to make the top four spots if they are to get to the playoffs. For the most part, there are only 10 or so games left for teams across the four divisions. This provides a clear indication of which teams will be battling it out until the final games of the NHL regular season.
