Alberta Sports Betting Regulation Plans: Latest Update
👉 Alberta’s regulated online gambling market is finally set to launch on July 13, 2026, as Alberta moves toward a private, provincially overseen iGaming framework.
Alberta Regulation Timeline
On May 7, 2025, Alberta passed the third reading of Bill 48: the iGaming Alberta Act, laying the groundwork for a regulated online gambling market.
On May 15, the bill received the Royal Assent (AKA it was written into law, and Alberta just needs to give the green light). While there was much prep work between then and now, Alberta finally opened operator registration on January 13, 2026, inching closer to it’s recently announced July 13 launch.
- Official Alberta iGaming launch: July 13, 2026
- Beta testing: March 2026
- Operator approval period: January–March 2026
- Operator registration opens: January 13, 2026
- Royal Assent granted: May 15, 2025
- Third Reading passed: May 7, 2025
- Second Reading passed: April 23, 2025
- Bill 48 introduced: March 26, 2025
After opening the door for countless private operators to apply in January (onwards), Alberta is close to vetting the top Canadian bookmakers and debuting a competitive ✨regulated✨ market with the goal of creating a safe, legal market for current bettors—while redirecting revenue back into the province and implementing player protection measures, like centralized province-wide self-exclusion tools. Slowly, but surely, Alberta is following in Ontario‘s footsteps thanks to Bill 48.
What is Bill 48?
👉 The iGaming Alberta Act, also known as Bill 48, was legislation designed to introduce a new online gambling market featuring both private and provincially regulated operators.
This bill created the new Crown corporation, the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), to oversee private operators, while the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) remains in charge of regulation.
👉 So, what’s the game plan on Bill 48?
Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, wants to make Alberta online sports betting safer for everyone and increase revenue for government programs by regulating the province’s existing gambling scene rather than encouraging new players to join. That doesn’t mean we won’t give it the ol’ college try with betting tips and best practices, though! But before we get ahead of ourselves, what’s the legal sitch’ right now? Let’s take a look.
Is Sports Betting Legal in Alberta?
Yes, sports betting is legal in Alberta, but only to a limited extent—at least for the time being. Canada legalized single-game sports betting at a federal level, rolling out Bill C-218 in August of 2021, with the caveat that individual provinces must oversee gambling rules and regulations within their respective jurisdictions.
Alberta aims to establish a regulated online gambling market and open the floodgates for private operators, taking a page straight from Ontario’s playbook—with an even stronger emphasis on safety and self-exclusion.
The Canadian “Grey-Market”
Single-game betting is available through provincial sportsbooks across most of Canada (some folks still have to place their bets physically in person—rough—but, hey, at least you’re getting your steps in). As of today, Ontario is the only province that allows private sportsbooks to operate and compete in a regulated market—but if everything goes as planned, that’s soon to change.
In terms of legal sports betting, Alberta only has two regulated gambling options (Play Alberta and Sports Select), and all other online sportsbooks are part of the grey (note: legal) market. However, soon, our favourite books will be by the books.

Sports betting in Alberta is child’s play—well, 18+ technically, but you get the point. We have faith that even the greenest of bettors can nail these four simple steps. Here’s how to bet on sports in Alberta:
1. Choose a Sportsbook
By now, you should already have an Alberta betting site in mind, but if you can’t decide, scroll up or check out our reviews of the top Canadian sportsbooks for a full breakdown. Consider the available sports, leagues, promotions, customer support lines, and banking options when selecting your new sportsbook. Not to mention how the odds compare and whether the betting site has any unique features. Pro tip: Sign up for multiple Alberta sports betting sites to compare odds!
2. Create an Account
After you find your go-to sportsbook (or sports betting lineup—there’s no shame in playing the field 😉), sign up using one of our links to score a stellar welcome bonus! Be prepared to enter your personal details and create a super secure password, verify your account with your government-issued ID, and even download a geolocator in some cases (to verify your location). Also, keep an eye on your inbox for account verification.
3. Make a Deposit
When you’re ready to make it rain—ahem, fund your sports betting account—just remember: most joining offers hinge on your initial deposit. Once you locate the cashier page, you’ll need to select your payment method (Interac e-Transfer, credit cards, digital currencies, you name it), enter your deposit amount and payment details, hit confirm—and boom, you’re in business.
4. Start Sports Betting
Now, you should be off to the races—or whatever wagers get your rocks off. Explore what your sportsbook has to offer, browse top odds and the hottest sporting events, and let the betting begin! After finding odds that strike your fancy, all you need to do is click on the odds, enter your wager amount, and once you’re happy with your bet slip, place your bet(s)! Please play responsibly.

How We Review Alberta Betting Sites
We pride ourselves on delivering unbiased reviews, expert insights, and the best-of-the-best to our fellow bettors. So, here’s how we ranked the top Alberta sportsbooks:
📖 Licensing and Regulation
Has anyone noticed this elephant in the room? Yes? No? Honestly, where have you been? Alberta is in the market for a regulated sports betting market (and we are here for it!). Currently, Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) oversees all legal betting options, and unfortunately, our private bookmakers haven’t made the cut—yet! All the sportsbooks we’ve covered are licensed and regulated by their gaming authorities; however, they are still considered part of the grey market in Alberta.
🖥️ User Experience and Interface
If a betting site has mouth-watering odds and every market under the sun—but a horrendous user interface, there’s no chance it’s making it onto our list. Navigation should always be intuitive, but beyond that, we’re always on the hunt for sportsbooks with easy-to-access bet slips, detailed betting histories and stats, straightforward parlays, and unique features that streamline and elevate the sports betting experience. If we have to squint, scroll, or swear to find the odds, we’ll happily take our bets elsewhere.
💵 Banking Options and Payout Speed
When it comes to betting sites, how you pay (and get paid!) is a big deal. We often prefer sites with various payment methods, but there are definitely some outliers that take on specific markets. Catering to crypto-lovers galore, Parimatch accepts numerous cryptocurrencies—and Interac e-Transfer (thank god)—but not a single credit card. Additionally, we consider how long each transaction takes, as lengthy transaction times can delay your deposits—and no one likes waiting on withdrawals!
📈 Betting Markets and Odds
As sharp bettors, competitive odds are our bread and butter. Most of us have multiple sportsbook accounts, and when placing a personal bet, we’ll almost always go with the site with the best odds. Plus, the available sports, leagues, and betting markets all influence which sportsbooks we favour. Odds are, you’re the same—whether you’re banking on the Edmonton Oilers taking home the Stanley Cup or betting on who will win the next federal election (or, you know, whatever you’re actually interested in)!
👩💻Customer Support
Speaking from experience, having a solid customer support team at your disposal is make or break. If you run into any issues with your payments, bets, or winnings, what are FAQ and help pages actually supposed to do? There’s no substitution for a knowledgeable customer service team with a 24/7 live chat feature—a phone line and email can’t hurt either. Of course, we ran into a few duds (and might’ve made a few enemies) along the way, but our top Alberta sportsbooks all have responsive, knowledgeable, and understanding customer service reps.
👼 Security and Responsible Gambling
Promoting responsible gambling is one of our top priorities. At the end of the day, betting is a form of entertainment (the end), and you should only wager what you’re willing to lose. That’s why we look for sportsbooks with responsible gambling features, from daily limits and self-exclusion to best betting practices and additional resources. Since safety is key, we also look for sites with industry-standard measures like SLL encryption to protect your personal and financial data. And remember, Alberta sports bettors must be 18 or older to place a legal bet; if a site skips age verification, it’s a major red flag!
💰 Bonuses and Promotions
Call it a shot in the dark, but we have the sneaking suspicion that Alberta sports bettors might love bonuses as much as we do—there, we said it! Shocker, eh? When you sign up with any of the Alberta sports betting sites on our list (using one of our exclusive links, of course), you’ll score excellent welcome bonuses. We also had a peek at the ongoing bonuses and promotions the sites had to offer and were impressed with the selection, from bonus bets and bet boosts to deposit bonuses and casino promos. Plus, we have a soft spot for sites that have player rewards and VIP programs.

- Futures: Placed months in advance—these bets are on eventual winners of major tournaments to take place in the future.
- Parlays: Combining two or more bets onto a single bet slip is considered a parlay, which comes with a higher reward—but every leg needs to hit in order to cash out.
- Totals: Known as the classic over/under bet, you can bet on the combined scores of both teams.
- Prop bets: Bet on any in-game moment like player stats, the first team to score, or even the colour of the Gatorade dump.
