Alberta Sports Betting Regulation Plans: Latest Update

On March 26, 2025, Alberta introduced Bill 48: the iGaming Alberta Act, laying the groundwork for a regulated online gambling market. The bill would create a new Crown corporation, iGaming Alberta, to oversee private operators, while the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) remains in charge of regulation. With the goal of creating a safe, legal market for current bettors, redirecting revenue back into the province, and implementing player protection measures, this bill aims to open the door for countless operators in a competitive ✨regulated✨ market.

Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, wants to make Alberta online sports betting safer for everyone and increase revenue for government programs by regulating the province’s existing gambling scene rather than encouraging new players to join (that doesn’t mean we won’t give it the ol’ college try! We’ll throw in some best betting practices, tips, and advice, of course!) If Bill 48 passes, Dale Nally plans to roll out a centralized self-exclusion platform, allowing Albertans to tap out of all regulated sportsbooks alongside the regulation of private bookmakers by the end of this year or early 2026. But what’s the legal sitch’ now, you ask? Stick around to find out!

Is Sports Betting Legal in Alberta?

Yes, sports betting is legal in Alberta, but only to a limited extent—at least for the time being. Canada legalized single-game sports betting at a federal level, rolling out Bill C-218 in August of 2021, with the caveat that individual provinces must oversee gambling rules and regulations within their respective jurisdictions. Single-game betting is available through provincial sportsbooks across most of Canada (some folks still have to place their bets physically in person—rough—but, hey, at least you’re getting your steps in). As of today, Ontario is the only province that allows private sportsbooks to operate and compete in a regulated market—but if everything goes as planned, that’s soon to change.

In terms of legal sports betting, Alberta only has two regulated gambling options (Play Alberta and Sports Select), and all other online sportsbooks are technically part of the grey market. However, soon, our favourite books will be by the books. Alberta aims to establish a regulated online gambling market and open the floodgates for private operators, taking a page straight from Ontario’s playbook—with an even stronger emphasis on safety and self-exclusion.

How To Bet On Sports In Alberta

Sports betting in Alberta is child’s play—well, 18+ technically, but you get the point. We have faith that even the greenest of bettors can nail these four simple steps. Here’s how to bet on sports in Alberta:

  1. Choose a Sportsbook
  2. Create an Account
  3. Make a Deposit
  4. Start Betting

1. Choose a Sportsbook

By now, you should already have an Alberta betting site in mind, but if you can’t decide, scroll up or check out our reviews of the top Canadian sportsbooks for a full breakdown. Consider the available sports, leagues, promotions, customer support lines, and banking options when selecting your new sportsbook. Not to mention how the odds compare and whether the betting site has any unique features. Pro tip: it’s ok to sign up with more than one betting site!

2. Create an Account

After you find your go-to sportsbook (or sports betting lineup—there’s no shame in playing the field 😉), sign up using one of our links to score a stellar welcome bonus! Be prepared to enter your personal details and create a super secure password, verify your account with your government-issued ID, and even download a geolocator in some cases (to verify your location). Also, keep an eye on your inbox for account verification.

3. Make a Deposit

When you’re ready to make it rain—ahem, fund your sports betting account—just remember: most joining offers hinge on your initial deposit. Once you locate the cashier page, you’ll need to select your payment method (Interac e-Transfer, credit cards, digital currencies, you name it), enter your deposit amount and payment details, hit confirm—and boom, you’re in business.

4. Start Sports Betting

Now, you should be off to the races—or whatever wagers get your rocks off. Explore what your sportsbook has to offer, browse top odds and the hottest sporting events, and let the betting begin! After finding odds that strike your fancy, all you need to do is click on the odds, enter your wager amount, and once you’re happy with your bet slip, place your bet(s)! Please play responsibly.

How We Review Alberta Betting Sites

We pride ourselves on delivering unbiased reviews, expert insights, and the best-of-the-best to our fellow bettors. So, here’s how we ranked the top Alberta sportsbooks:

Licensing and Regulation

Has anyone noticed this elephant in the room? Yes? No? Honestly, where have you been? Alberta is in the market for a regulated sports betting market (and we are here for it!). Currently, Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) oversees all legal betting options, and unfortunately, our private bookmakers haven’t made the cut—yet! All the sportsbooks we’ve covered are licensed and regulated by their gaming authorities; however, they are still considered part of the grey market in Alberta.

User Experience and Interface

If a betting site has mouth-watering odds and every market under the sun—but a horrendous user interface, there’s no chance it’s making it onto our list. Navigation should always be intuitive, but beyond that, we’re always on the hunt for sportsbooks with easy-to-access bet slips, detailed betting histories and stats, straightforward parlays, and unique features that streamline and elevate the sports betting experience. If we have to squint, scroll, or swear to find the odds, we’ll happily take our bets elsewhere.

Bonuses and Promotions

Call it a shot in the dark, but we have the sneaking suspicion that Alberta sports bettors might love bonuses as much as we do—there, we said it! Shocker, eh? When you sign up with any of the Alberta sports betting sites on our list (using one of our exclusive links, of course), you’ll score excellent welcome bonuses. We also had a peek at the ongoing bonuses and promotions the sites had to offer and were impressed with the selection, from bonus bets and bet boosts to deposit bonuses and casino promos. Plus, we have a soft spot for sites that have player rewards and VIP programs.

Banking Options and Payout Speed

When it comes to betting sites, how you pay (and get paid!) is a big deal. We often prefer sites with various payment methods, but there are definitely some outliers that take on specific markets. Catering to crypto-lovers galore, Parimatch accepts numerous cryptocurrencies—and Interac e-Transfer (thank god)—but not a single credit card. Additionally, we consider how long each transaction takes, as lengthy transaction times can delay your deposits—and no one likes waiting on withdrawals!

Betting Markets and Odds

As sharp bettors, competitive odds are our bread and butter. Most of us have multiple sportsbook accounts, and when placing a personal bet, we’ll almost always go with the site with the best odds. Plus, the available sports, leagues, and betting markets all influence which sportsbooks we favour. Odds are, you’re the same—whether you’re banking on the Edmonton Oilers taking home the Stanley Cup or betting on who will win the next federal election (or, you know, whatever you’re actually interested in)!

Customer Support

Speaking from experience, having a solid customer support team at your disposal is make or break. If you run into any issues with your payments, bets, or winnings, what are FAQ and help pages actually supposed to do? There’s no substitution for a knowledgeable customer service team with a 24/7 live chat feature—a phone line and email can’t hurt either. Of course, we ran into a few duds (and might’ve made a few enemies) along the way, but our top Alberta sportsbooks all have responsive, knowledgeable, and understanding customer service reps.

Security and Responsible Gambling

Promoting responsible gambling is one of our top priorities. At the end of the day, betting is a form of entertainment (the end), and you should only wager what you’re willing to lose. That’s why we look for sportsbooks with responsible gambling features, from daily limits and self-exclusion to best betting practices and additional resources. Since safety is key, we also look for sites with industry-standard measures like SLL encryption to protect your personal and financial data. And remember, Alberta sports bettors must be 18 or older to place a legal bet; if a site skips age verification, it’s a major red flag!

Any guesses on which leagues Alberta sports bettors tend to favour? It’s not cricket, that’s for sure. As home to the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers, the NHL is obviously a massive market in the Alberta sports betting scene! Let’s explore the other popular sports betting leagues in Alberta, shall we?

National Hockey League Betting

Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final—who’s your favourite to win? No matter where your loyalties lie, one thing’s for certain: it’s time for Albertans to drop the gloves and hop online—those NHL bets won’t place themselves! From the Calgary Flames to the Edmonton Oilers, the best Alberta betting sites and apps serve up pucking amazing pre-game NHL betting options and live betting odds.

Canadian Football League Betting

Born and bred in Canada, three-down football is a season regular, boasting first-draft pick coverage from top-ranked online sportsbooks. Bookies offer fantastic CFL betting odds year-round, including prices on 81 regular-season games and four thrilling playoff battles—plus, we can’t forget the Grey Cup Championship match. Want a site that takes CFL seriously? Give our list of Alberta betting sites a shot!

NFL and NCAA Football Betting

When it comes to American pro and college football odds, online bookmakers step up their game season after season. While the WCLC offers a pitiful smattering of options, Alberta betting sites cover each and every single NFL and NCAAF match, from season openers to the Super Bowl confetti drop. Expect props, parlays, and all the spicy extras.

Major League Baseball Betting

Whether you’re betting on Canada’s Team, the Toronto Blue Jays or the other 29 Major League Baseball teams, Alberta bettors love their hardball action. Through 162 regular-season games, three playoff rounds, and the MLB World Series, online sportsbooks in the Wild Rose Country are ready to field your bets 24/7.

NCAA Basketball and NBA Betting

Remember the Toronto Raptors’ 2019 championship run? Or Florida’s March Madness magic? Unless you had two other contests to complete a three-team parlay ticket, the odds are Sports Select left you hanging. Luckily, our list of sportsbooks doesn’t let you down with bet singles, props, and everything in between—no buzzer beaters required.

International Soccer Betting

Offering some soccer, Sports Select falls a few balls short of a full net. No worries, eh! Whether it’s exciting Canadian Premier League, English Premier League or Major League Soccer action, Alberta-bound bettors can wager on every match from the pitch with the best Canadian bookmakers.

Betting on Global Sporting Events

Oddsmakers really shine when it comes to international events, offering hundreds of unique markets. Whether it’s Grand Slam tennis, F1 drama, UFC fights, or the Cricket World Cup, Alberta sportsbooks roll out hundreds of lines on global showstoppers—surf on over to an Alberta sportsbook and start betting today!

Political and Entertainment Betting

Albertans looking for odds on the Grammy and Oscar awards, or wanting to bet on Canada’s next Prime Minister, plus a slew of other odds on global politics, can’t do it at their local lottery kiosks. CSB bookies cover that though as innovative linemakers offer money line odds a variety of non-sports events.

Popular Betting Markets in Alberta

Now, onto the second half of the equation—betting markets, aka the types of bets you can place. Here are the most popular betting markets in Alberta:

  • Moneyline: As the most common wager, moneylines let you bet on the outright winner—period.
  • Spread: Taking it up a notch, you can bet how many points your team will win or lose by.
  • Futures: Placed months in advance—these bets are on eventual winners of major tournaments to take place in the future.
  • Parlays: Combining two or more bets onto a single bet slip is considered a parlay, which comes with a higher reward—but every leg needs to hit in order to cash out.
  • Totals: Known as the classic over/under bet, you can bet on the combined scores of both teams.
  • Prop bets: Bet on any in-game moment like player stats, the first team to score, or even the colour of the Gatorade dump.
  • Live betting: In-game bets are offered in the heat of the moment, but the odds shift fast, so timing is everything.

Online Casino Alberta

Outside of sports betting in Alberta, many of the top online bookmakers (including all the sportsbooks from our list!) also boast top-notch online casino platforms. However, the Ministry of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction aims to increase the number of legally regulated Alberta sports betting options while providing bettors with responsible gambling resources, safety tools, and centralized self-exclusion services by Q1 2026.

The History of Online Sports Betting in Alberta

Sports betting has long been a favorite pastime for many Albertans, with a rich history that spans several decades. From placing bets at local bookmakers to the emergence of online platforms, the landscape of sports betting in Alberta has experienced significant transformations.

Traditionally, sports betting in Alberta was limited to physical locations, such as local bookmakers and land-based casinos. These establishments offer a range of betting options, including wagers on popular sports like hockey, football, basketball, and more. Alberta sports betting enthusiasts would flock to these locations to place their bets and engage in the excitement of sports wagering.

However, the sports betting landscape in Alberta underwent a dramatic shift in 2021 with the advent of online platforms. Online sports betting has emerged as a popular alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar establishments. This transition has allowed Albertans to enjoy the convenience and flexibility of placing bets from the comfort of their own homes.

With the introduction of online sports betting, Albertans gained access to a wide range of betting options and markets. They could now place bets on not only local and national sporting events but also international competitions. This expansion in available options added a new level of excitement and diversity to the sports betting experience in Alberta.

When it comes to online sports betting in Alberta, there are several prominent platforms and sportsbooks that cater to residents of the province. bet365, a well-known international sports betting platform, has gained popularity among Albertans due to its comprehensive range of betting markets and user-friendly interface. In addition to these platforms, several other online sportsbooks have established a presence in Alberta. Bet99, Betway, and BetVictor are among the platforms that offer a wide range of sports betting options and competitive odds for Alberta bettors. These platforms ensure that residents of Alberta have ample choices when it comes to selecting a sportsbook that aligns with their preferences.

One significant advantage of online sports betting in Alberta is the availability of mobile apps. Alberta sports betting apps allow users to place bets on their favorite sports events directly from their smartphones or tablets. This convenience has revolutionized the way people engage with sports betting, providing a seamless and on-the-go experience for Alberta bettors. Popular sports betting apps such as bet365, Sports Interaction, and Betway offer dedicated mobile applications that are optimized for a smooth and intuitive user experience.
