How to Read NHL Betting Odds

NHL odds show how much you could win based on your bet—and they give clues about how likely each team is to win. You’ll usually see them in “American odds” format, with either a minus (-) or a plus (+) sign.
- Minus odds (e.g. -150): This team is the favourite. The number shows how much you need to bet to win $100. For example, if the Ottawa Senators are -180 for a game, you need to risk $180 to win $100 profit.
- Plus odds (e.g. +200): This team is the underdog. The number shows how much you’d win on a $100 bet. For example, if the Columbus Blue Jackets are +300, a $100 bet wins you $300 profit if they win.
All bets get their original stake refunded if they win—so the payout is your winnings plus whatever you wagered.
💡 Note: You can usually select which odds format your sportsbook uses, but you can always use our handy odds calculator to convert odds into different formats quickly or to calculate your potential winnings.

| Toronto Maple Leafs | $50 | -150 | $83.33 | $33.33 |

| Vancouver Canucks | $10 | +200 | $30.00 | $20.00 |
| Vancouver Canucks | $50 | +200 | $150.00 | $100.00 |
| Vancouver Canucks | $100 | +200 | $300.00 | $200.00 |

Most Popular NHL Betting Markets
If you’re new to sports betting but want to bet on the latest NHL odds Canada offers, learn how to read NHL betting lines and understand how to win all your hockey bets this season. Below, we’ve covered how traditional game lines, such as moneylines, puck lines, and goal totals, work, as well as more in-depth markets like prop bets and futures.
🏒 NHL Moneyline Bets
The most popular NHL game odds available are the moneyline odds. Betting on the moneyline is simply picking which team will win the game outright.
In moneyline odds, favourites in a matchup are displayed using a minus sign (-), whereas underdogs are shown using a plus sign (+). If a team is favoured, the number attached displays how much you’d need to wager in order to profit $100. For underdogs, the number indicates the potential profit won by wagering $100.
Example: let’s say you want to place a bet on the Leafs vs Canadiens game. If the Leafs hold -200 odds, that means a $200 wager on their moneyline odds would net you a $300 total return, with $100 being profit and $200 being your original stake returned.
Inversely, if you backed the Canadiens to win at +180, if you wagered $100, you’d net a total payout of $280 with $180 being profit, and $100 being your original stake returned.
🏒NHL Puck Line (Spread) Bets
The puck line is another popular betting option available on NHL games throughout the regular season and playoffs. Betting on the puck line means wagering on the margin of victory: the favourite must win by more than a set number of goals for the bet to win, while the underdog can win outright or lose by fewer points than the spread and still win the bet.
The puck line is a fixed 1.5-point spread on hockey games. The favourite in a game will be displayed at -1.5. This means that the favourite needs to win the game by two or more goals in order to be successful. On the other side of the equation, the underdog will be represented at +1.5. This means that they would need to either win outright or drop the game by one.
Example:
- St. Louis Blues puck line: -1.5 with odds +180
- Dallas Stars puck line: +1.5 with odds -225
This means if you bet on St. Louis at -1.5, they must win by two or more goals for the bet to win. A $100 wager at +180 odds would return $280 (profit of $180). If you bet on Dallas at +1.5, they can either win outright or lose by only 1 goal for the bet to win. The -225 odds mean you must risk $225 to win $100 on the Stars covering the puck line.
NHL puck line betting is a great way to add increased value when betting on a favourite, while providing some insurance to bettors who are putting their faith in an underdog.
🏒 NHL Over/Under (Goal Total) Bets
The Over/Under in hockey is when you pick whether you think the total number of goals scored in a game is over or under the predetermined line. Over/Under betting is a great way to get in on the action of the latest odds, as you can focus on the puck going in the net, rather than the outright winner of the game.
Example: if the over/under for a game is 5.5 and you bet the Over, the final score needs to add up to 6 or more goals in order to hit the Over and win your bet. Inversely, if it finishes with five or fewer total goals, your bet on the Over would lose as the Under would be the winning market.
With a recent increase in scoring across the NHL, the average over/under line typically opens at around 6.5 goals. This depends on several factors, including the starting goalies for each side, the scoring averages for each team, and the play styles of both teams in the matchup.

While game lines are a great starting point for any bettor, you can dive deeper into your NHL bets with these thrilling NHL betting markets.
🏒 NHL Futures
NHL futures allow you to place bets on major events and milestones set to occur during or at the end of the NHL season. Some of the most popular hockey futures include betting on the Stanley Cup winner, NHL award winners, as well as statistical milestones such as a player’s total goals scored during the regular season.
Most popular NHL Awards to bet on:
- NHL Conn Smythe Odds
- NHL Hart Memorial Odds
- NHL Art Ross Odds
- NHL Rocket Richard Odds
- NHL Selke Award Odds
- NHL Vezina Trophy Odds
- NHL Calder Trophy Odds
- NHL Norris Trophy Odds
- NHL Jack Adams Award Odds
- NHL Lady Byng Award Odds
- NHL Ted Lindsay Award Odds
Placing bets on NHL futures early in the season can be advantageous, as this is typically when odds are at their highest. Once the season begins, NHL futures odds will shift constantly as teams and players perform and the early contenders for major awards emerge. 👉 Check out Sports Interaction for an exhaustive list of NHL futures markets!
🏒 NHL Player Props
One of the most popular ways to bet on any hockey game is through NHL player props. With these wagers, instead of focusing on the final outcome of the game, all you need to worry about is the individual play of the player you’ve backed.
Popular examples of NHL player props include:
- Anytime goal scorers
- Shots on goal totals
- Total saves made.
🏒 NHL Parlays
NHL parlays allow you to combine multiple bets into a single wager. Parlays are made by combining two or more bets into a single bet slip. A parlay provides you with increased odds with each wager you add. While the potential payout for an NHL parlay can be insanely good, they’re also difficult to hit.
In order to win your NHL parlays, every “leg” of your bet must hit. That means if even a single pick featured in your wager comes up short, the entire parlay results in a loss.
Traditionally, parlays are crafted using multiple games, but bettors can also create same-game parlays in order to hone in on several betting markets from the same game. This betting strategy can make even the most mundane regular-season game feel like the Stanley Cup final.
⚠️ While parlays can supply the best bang for your buck, especially when incorporating underdogs into the mix, they are not the recommended way to bet effectively. While the wager amounts may be lower than what you’d place for a straight bet, with the high rate of loss in parlays, you could wind up losing more than you think, leading to a loss in your bankroll.

🛒 Shop Odds & Lines
Before you go ahead and throw down a bet on the latest NHL odds, make sure you’re getting the best possible return for your action. Compare the NHL markets offered by each sportsbook, as there are numerous reputable NHL betting sites available. ⚡ Pro tip: You can sign up with more than one sportsbook!
Are you interested in live betting, future books, props, NHL spreads, or straight moneyline wagering? Determine how you want to bet and then decide which sportsbook provides the best ice hockey betting options for you.
Look at the odds offered by each oddsmaker as well. Is one site slightly looser with its odds than others? Which sportsbooks are the quickest to post their odds on an NHL point spread? This can be especially vital at the most important time of year when you are seeking out the best NHL playoff odds.
🤓 Do Your Research
Don’t bet blindly; be sure to do your research before placing a wager. By examining recent trends, play, and data available for a matchup, you can determine where the best bet on the action will be.
Consider factors like: is a team at the end of a long road trip, banged up and worn out? East Coast teams playing West Coast night games are prone to being upset because they are taking the ice just before their usual bedtime. Likewise, a Pacific Coast team skating in an afternoon game on the East Coast would be performing around the time when they’d typically be just sitting down to breakfast.
Here are some other basic questions you should be asking as you place your bets on hockey odds:
- Are any players injured?
- Are the teams tired from hard-fought matches?
- Is the media narrative affecting the odds?
- Am I overvaluing my favourite team because I want them to win?
- Is a team playing its backup goalie?
- Are a team’s top scorers slumping, or are they hotter than blacktop in July?
✋ Bet Responsibly
Lastly, if you’re going to bet on the NHL, make sure you do so responsibly. Avoid unhealthy betting habits, such as chasing losses, betting more than you can afford, and focusing solely on hitting big wins.
Each of the top NHL sportsbooks offers helpful responsible gambling tools such as account limits, self-exclusions, and helplines/support groups for anyone struggling with a gambling problem. Keep your betting fun!

How the 2025-2026 NHL Season Works

How the NHL Playoffs Work
Each team competes to make the playoffs, where they can then compete for the Stanley Cup. The top three teams from each division automatically qualify for the NHL playoffs, and the two next best teams, regardless of their division, will clinch postseason spots as “Wild Cards”.
The top team in each conference will play the worst of the two wild-card teams, with the other divisional winner in the conference facing the remaining wild-card squad. From here, the teams that placed second and third in their respective divisions will square off.
After the dust has settled from the opening round of the NHL playoffs, the winner of each two-seed vs three-seed series will take on the winner of their division’s top regular-season team vs wild-card squad series. This is known as a “fixed bracket,” as previously the playoffs were reseeded after each round.

NHL Odds Canada FAQs
In American odds, the favourite is shown by a minus (-) sign and the underdog is shown by a plus (+) sign. For each betting market, the minus sign indicates how much needs to be wagered in order to win $100 (e.g. -150 = $150 wager to win $100 profit). The plus sign indicates how much profit is won by wagering $100 (e.g. +150 = $100 wager to win $150 profit).
+200 odds in betting indicate an underdog. This means that a $100 wager on a +200 underdog would payout $200 in profit, a total return of $300.
Over/Under bets, also known as goal total bets in hockey, are a betting market that allows you to wager on how many total goals will be scored in a game. For example, if the line is set at 6.5 goals, you could bet either the Over or the Under. If seven or more goals are scored, the over hits; if six or less are scored, the under is the winning market.
There are several different types of hockey bets, including game lines such as the moneyline, puck line, and over/under, as well as more exotic bets like futures, prop bets, and parlays.
The point spread in hockey, also known as the puck line, is traditionally set at 1.5. This means that a favourite (-1.5) would need to win by two or more goals, whereas an underdog (+1.5) would need to either win outright or finish within one goal of the lead.
