NHL Picks & Predictions: Pittsburgh Penguins @ Vegas Golden Knights

Our Tuesday night game is a Metropolitan vs Pacific Division matchup, as we head to the T-Mobile Arena in Vegas as the Golden Knights host the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Golden Knights will be looking to record a fifth consecutive win, while the Penguins have won three of their last five.

Can the Penguins snap the Vegas win-streak?

Pittsburgh Penguins (2.25) vs Vegas Golden Knights (1.66)

The Golden Knights are one of the most improved teams in the NHL of late, picking up wins against the Coyotes, Ducks, Flyers and the St Louis Blues in their last. The win puts Vegas 24-15-6 outright.

They took the game in OT, in a spectacular comeback overturning a 3-goal deficit against the Blues. It was a goal a piece for Reaves, Roy, Smith, Stastny, with Stephenson the hero clinching the game in the final seconds.

The Penguins will go to the T-Mobile Arena off the back of a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Florida Panthers. The Penguins haven’t managed to put up a significantly long run of wins, however they are 25-12-5 for the season and sit third in their division.

The last time these two teams played against each other back in October, Pittsburgh lost out in a 3-0 shutout. They’ll be hoping they can do a bit more work on the ice in this one.

The NHL betting odds favour a win for the Golden Knights, and given their current form and the face they’ll be playing in front of the home crowd, we’re of the same opinion.

Take Vegas Golden Knights to win here.

Parlay Pick: Golden Knights to win & over 3.5 total (3.79)

The Golden Knights are firing on all cylinders at the moment. They have put up 19 goals in 4 games, with 5 in each of their last 3 games and 4 in the matchup with the Coyotes.

Max Pacioretty leads the Golden Knights scoring tables, he’s managed to put up 18 goals and 25 assists so far this season. Right-wingers Stone (16g/25a) and Smith (16g/18a) aren’t far behind, with Canadian Jonathan Marchessault (15g/16a) just behind.

Expect more of the same here against a Pittsburgh team who are allowing the fifth most goals per game, with an average of 2.93 goals allowed per game.

Although the Penguins are allowing a lot of goals per game, they are also putting up the joint-seventh most goals per game with 3.3 on average. The Penguins will need top-scorer Jake Guentzel (20g/23a) to turn up again tonight, if they are to take the win.

Expect the Golden Knights to win & over 3.5 total.

Vegas Golden Knights to win first period & first period over 1.5 total (6.40)

Recent success has pushed the Vegas Golden Knights up to sixteenth in the NHL power rankings, and given how well they’ve performed in the new year we expect them to be even higher by next week.

Vegas have scored two or more in three of their last four games, in which they won every game, and the only game where they didn’t score in the first, they won in OT anyway. In fact, they went 3-0 in the first against St Louis.

We expect the Vegas momentum to keep on rolling into this one. They’ll be hungry to stamp their authority on the game early, having conceded so many so early on against the Blues. It’s doubtful Gerard Gallant will allow that for a second game in a row.

Given the kind of form Vegas are in, coupled with the fact they’re on top of the pile in the Pacific Division we wanted to choose a Vegas game for NHL free picks of the week.

Take the Vegas to win the first period & first period to go over 1.5 total.
