NHL Weekend Picks & Predictions: January 3-5

As we head into the first weekend of 2020 we have a number of excellent matchups for you, including the league leaders the Washington Capitals, the Bruins and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The reigning Stanley Cup holders the St Louis Blues find themselves at the top of the NHL power rankings, pushing the Capitals off the top spot for the first time all season.

Who will take the points this weekend?

Washington Capitals (2.69) @ Carolina Hurricanes (2.23)

We head to the PNC Center for a Metropolitan matchup as the Carolina Hurricanes host the Washington Capitals. This is the second in the head-to-head series, the first one was won 6-4 by the Capitals.

The Hurricanes are the odds on favourites to win, due to the fact they enter this one off the back of 2 wins, while the Capitals will look to snap their 2-game losing streak.

In the last five games, Washington have had some of the hardest available fixtures. They lost to the Bruins, Hurricanes and Islanders, while they beat the Blue Jackets and Lightning.

Carolina are 6-3-1 in their last ten and have started to show the kind of form we all expected from them. The young Finn Sebastian Aho continues to lead the offense for them, now with 23 goals and 13 assists for the season overall.

We wanted to include this game in our NHL free picks, as the Hurricanes are looking to march their way up the Metropolitan Division.

Take the Capitals to win here.

Edmonton Oilers (3.50) @ Boston Bruins (1.87)

We have a Pacific versus Atlantic Division matchup for our next game, as the Boston Bruins host the Edmonton Oilers at TD Garden.

The Oilers rough period continues to stretch into 2020, they go 21-17-5 for the season outright, but are 3-6-1 in their last 10 games. Draisaitl, McDavid, Neal, Kassian and Nugent-Hopkins continue to produce the goods for Boston.

The Oilers are on the road for their next few games and they won’t be easy. Starting with this one against the Bruins, then the Maple Leafs and then against Canadian rivals Montreal.

The Bruins go 24-7-11 outright. They snapped out of their funk a few weeks back, but enter this one looking to snap a two-game losing streak. Before that the Bruins smashed the Capitals, then won the head-to-head series against the Sabres.

The last two losses have been in OT and via the shootout, so they haven’t been comprehensive losses and Boston will feel they can get the win in this one given how slack the Oilers are right now.

Though the Oilers boast the best offensive duo in the league, the NHL betting odds are heavily against them with the Boston Bruins looking like clear favourites in the bookies eyes.

Expect the Bruins to win.

New York Islanders (2.96) @ Toronto Maple Leafs (2.09)

We have an Eastern Conference matchup for our last game of the weekend, as the Toronto Maple Leafs host the New York Islanders at the Scotiabank Arena on Sunday.

The New York Islanders have cooled off a bit since their form during December. They sit at 25-11-3 for the season, but lost out 2-1 in a shocking performance against the New Jersey Devils.

Mathew Barzal (16 goals and 18 assists) and Brock Nelson (15 goals and 16 assists) continue to lead the line for the Islanders.

The Maple Leafs have been in the form of the season of late, as they go 23-14-5 for the season overall. They have have won 8 of their last 10, including wins over the Jets, Hurricanes, Sabres and Oilers.

Expect the Toronto Maple Leafs to win.
