NHL Free Picks & Predictions: Dec 29 - Jan 2

The new year is upon us! We have all the coverage of the best games in the NHL during the last week of 2019. We also look forward to what January brings, notably the 2020 NHL All-Star Game, with the captains now announced.

The Capitals remain out in front with 27 wins in the league. We will cover the Tuesday night game, between the Islanders and Capitals as well as much more.

Will we see any big upsets in the final days of 2019?

Ottawa Senators (4.79) @ Pittsburgh Penguins (1.55)

We head to the PPG Paints Arena on Monday night, as the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Ottawa Senators in the Eastern Conference clash.

The Sens will travel to Pennsylvania with the wind in their sails. They managed to take a win in their last, beating the Sabres 3-1 at home. They stand at 16-18-4 outright.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau grabbed two in the win over Buffalo and now boasts a record of 18 goals and 10 assists for the 2019/20 campaign. He continues to lead the scoring tables for the Canadian side.

The homeside enter this one looking to make it three on the bounce, picking up back-to-back wins in the head-to-head series with the Predators. They sit second in the Metropolitan Division, going 23-11-4 for the season.

The Penguins sit ninth in the NHL power rankings, after some excellent wins of late.

Expect the Penguins to win at home.

New York Islanders (3.18) @ Washington Capitals (2.02)

The Washington Capitals remain at the top of the pile as go into 2020. They go home to the Capital One Arena having lost their last game 6-4 against the Carolina Hurricanes.

They’re third in the league in goals per game, putting up an average of 3.5 while they allow just 2.75 per game. All-Star captain Alex Ovechkin continues to lead the scoring tables for the Capitals, putting up 24 goals and 14 assists.

The Islanders are having a tough time of late, as they’ll look to snap a 3-game losing streak against the Wild before travelling to the Capital.

New York have dropped off over the last week, but they are still managing to put up 2.9 goals per game, while they allow 2.56 per game. The young Canadian Mathew Barzal is still the top-scorer, with 16 goals and 16 assists outright.

Take the Capitals to win this one.

New York Rangers (2.98) @ Edmonton Oilers (2.07)

We head to Rogers Place for the Tuesday night fixture as the New York Rangers travel to face off against the Edmonton Oilers.

The Oilers will enter this one having lost their last two, conceding to Canadian rivals the Canucks and Calgary Flames.

The Oilers form this season has been a real mystery. They go 20-17-4 outright for the season and are led in offense by the deadly-duo, in the form of McDavid (22 goals, 41 assists) and Draisaitl (22 goals, 31 assists).

The New York Rangers are 19-15-4 overall for the 2019/20 campaign. They will head to Edmonton with a bit of momentum, given that they’re looking to make it 3 wins in their last three.

They’re led in offense by the Russian Artemi Panarin, who has put up 21 goals and 31 assists so far this season.

We wanted to include this game in the NHL free picks this week, as the Oilers are such an anomaly this season. We keep expecting them to hit a run of form, but we are still holding out for it as we enter 2020.

Expect the Edmonton Oilers to beat the New York Rangers.

Winnipeg Jets @ Colorado Avalanche

Tuesday night hockey takes us to the Pepsi Center, as the Colorado Avalanche host the Winnipeg Jets.

The Jets will head to Colorado having missed out on the points in their last two games, losing out to rivals Montreal and St. Louis in their last. Though they put on a decent performance against the Blues, with Kyle Connor grabbing a couple of goals.

Winnipeg go 21-14-3 for the season outright and are led in attack by Mark Scheifele (17 goals and 23 assists) and Kyle Connor (17 goals and 18 assists). Winnipeg will face St Louis in the second of the head-to-head series before this one.

The Colorado Avalanche are 23-12-4 for the season outright. They will enter this game looking to snap a two-game losing streak. All-Star Nathan MacKinnon continues to lead the scoring tables for the Avalanche, putting up 22 goals and 34 assists.

The NHL betting odds will favour a win for Colorado in this one, given their current league form, and we tend to agree.

Take the Avalanche to win this one.
