NBA Weekend Picks & Predictions: January 3-5

We’re back! We missed the coverage on a few great games, including wins for the Clippers, Lakers, Rockets and a really low-scoring loss for the Raptors in the Eastern matchup against the Heat.

For the first weekend of the decade, the games will feature Joel Embiid and the 76ers facing off against Harden’s Rockets. As well as all the action from the Lakers and the Raptors, who will be looking to bounce back after their loss.

Can the 76ers snap their losing streak? Scroll down to read our first NBA free picks of 2020.

Philadelphia 76ers (2.63) @ Houston Rockets (1.53)

Houston Rockets come into this one off the back of a huge win against the Nuggets, taking the game 130-104 in front of the home crowd.

The Rockets are 23-11 for the season outright and currently sit fourth in the Western Conference. They are led by the NBA’s leading scorer and NBA All-star James Harden, who is averaging 38.2 points per game.

While Houston as a team are putting up 119.4 points per game, which is second in the league behind the Bucks. The Rockets aren’t quite as good defensively, allowing 114.0 points per game, 8th most in the league, which the 76ers will know about.

The 76ers will head to the Toyota Center, looking to snap a 3-game losing streak. An excellent win over the Bucks was suddenly drowned out by a run of disappointing results, losing to the Magic, Heat and Pacers.

Philadelphia are 23-13 for the season overall, tied for fourth with the Toronto Raptors but given their recent losses, they'll feel they should have been doing better. The Rockets have the best NBA betting odds here, and we agree with that assessment.

Toronto Raptors @ Brooklyn Nets

Despite a number of losses and injuries to the Raptors roster, they have managed to maintain a spot in the playoff positions for the duration of the season. They are currently 23-12 overall for the season, sitting joint fourth in the league.

An uncharacteristic performance in their last, left Toronto with their lowest score in the league this season. Serge Ibaka lead in points with 19, with Kyle Lowry putting up 15 points.

The Nets are flatlining at the moment, they go 16-17 overall. They go into this game having lost their last four games, losing out to the Rockets, Knicks, Timberwolves and Mavericks.

In the game against the Mavericks, Spencer Dinwiddie getting 19 points and 5 rebounds. Brooklyn are still led in offense by Kyrie Irving, averaging 28.5 points per game outright.

The Raptors have won four in their last eight, including wins over the Mavericks, Celtics and Cavaliers. Despite a poor week in terms of results, the Toronto Raptors remain 9th in the NBA power rankings for the season so far.

Detroit Pistons vs Los Angeles Lakers

We have an Eastern versus Western Conference matchup for Sunday's game, as the Lakers will host Detroit in the second game of 2020 at the STAPLES Center.

Towards the end of 2019, the Lakers were having a really tough time - losing out to the Pacers, Bucks, Nuggets and bitter rivals the Clippers. But since then they’ve really turned things around, taking wins against the Mavs, Blazers and Suns.

LeBron and AJ seemed to be back to their best, putting up a combined score of 57 against the Suns. After those wins the Lakers are back atop the Western Conference, going 27-7 overall.

The Pistons will turn to Derrick Rose (17.6 points per game) and Andre Drummond (16.7 points per game) again in this one. The Lakers are back on top and as such we wanted to include the first picks of 2020 with LeBron’s team. Will they make the playoffs?

Expect the Lakers to win this one.
