Winter Olympics 2022; Womens Speed Skating Team Pursuit Picks

Team Canada has another Speed Skating medal chance early on Tuesday morning in the women’s team pursuit. Let’s have a look at the betting picks.

Can Team Canada upset the odds and win gold in the Women’s Team Pursuit Speed Skating? The Canadian ladies will be fighting it out against the Netherlands in their semi-final.

Win that, and they are guaranteed a silver medal at the very least.

Women’s Team Pursuit 2022; All you need to know

Unfortunately, it’s another late night for Canadians wanting to watch. The semi-finals get underway at 1.30 in the morning, so it’s another event for the night owls!

  • Event; Speed Skating Women’s Team Pursuit
  • Venue; National Speed Skating Oval, Beijing
  • When; Tuesday, February 15th, 2022
  • Time; 1.30 am ET

The format is head-to-head semi-finals. In the first race, it’s favourites Japan, who take on ROC. The Japanese quartet is the betting favourite at 1.67 to take the gold.

Team Canada goes up against the Netherlands in the second semi-final. Canada is the betting favourite in their race, so if all goes to form, they will at the very least leave with silver.

The two winners go into the final later in the morning, with the two losers racing off for the bronze medal.

How to bet on Women’s Team Pursuit and Betting Odds

There is individual race betting, where you can bet on the winner of the race between Japan and the ROC, and the winner of the race between Canada and the Netherlands.

You can also bet on the overall winner of the competition. As you can see below, Japan is the 1.67 favourite, followed by Canada at 3.10, the Netherlands at 5.50, and the ROC at a massive 76.00.

Japan1.571.50
Canada3.103.10
Netherlands5.506.00

There’s little point betting on anybody other than the ROC to finish in the top 3 at this stage of the event. The ROC is major outsiders, who aren’t expected to get on the podium, so there is no value in betting on the other three teams.

Japan @ 1.67

The Japanese quartet is the overwhelming favourite. They qualified from the quarter-finals with the fastest time of 2:53.61.

  1. Misaki Oshigiri
  2. Ayano Sato
  3. Miho Takagi
  4. Nana Takagi

Three of this team won this event in 2018, so they have Olympic pedigree and know how to handle the pressure.

At 1.67, they look a touch short to me. But they can’t be ignored, and will most probably win the gold medal. I’m not sure I would be betting on them at those odds though.

Canada @ 3.10

The Canadian ladies qualified with the second quickest time, 2:53.97 – just 0.36 of a second slower than the Japanese team.

It’s for this reason that I won’t be betting on the Japanese at those short odds.

  1. Ivanie Blondin
  2. Valerie Maltais
  3. Alexa Scott
  4. Isabelle Weidemann

Three members of this team finished fourth at the 2018 Olympics, so they will be desperate to put that right and win a medal of some colour.

At far better odds than the Japanese, I’m going to take a punt on Team Canada using one of the betting bonuses I mentioned earlier.

The Netherlands @ 5.50

The Dutch team was the third-fastest qualifier for the semi-finals with a time of 2:57.26, a massive 3.65 seconds slower than the Japanese ladies.

  1. Antoinette de Jong
  2. Marijke Groenewoud
  3. Irene Schouten
  4. Ireen Wust

The Dutch are traditionally strong at speed skating and picked up the silver medal at this event 4 years ago.

Ireen Wust has six Olympic medals to her name, with her first coming in the 3000m in Turin back in 2006.

She won her sixth in the 1500m at this Olympics. Their quarter-finals qualifying time was slow, and they will have to improve on that to have a chance for gold or silver.

I think they may be worth a small cover bet. Their odds are good, they have proven winners in their team, and they are probably going to improve on their showing from the quarter-finals.

ROC @ 76.00

The big outsiders are the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). They were the slowest of the four qualifiers for the semi-finals with a quarter-final time of 2:57.66. That was 4.05 seconds slower than the Japanese team.

  1. Elizaveta Golubeva
  2. Anastasiia Grigoreva
  3. Evgeniia Lalenkova
  4. Natalia Voronina

They were only 0.40 of a second slower than the Dutch girls though. So if the Dutch don’t up to their game (I think they will), the Russians could be worth a small bet on making the podium.
