NorthStar Bets Weekly NHL Betting Insights (March 12)

It’s time for a weekly breakdown of the hockey betting market, powered by NorthStar Bets.

With the trade deadline behind us, it won’t be long before we begin to shift our focus toward the Stanley Cup playoffs, and rightfully so. The final five weeks of the regular season is not the time to over-extend as a sports bettor. Not much changes week-to-week in the NHL, and as the table below illustrates, the most popular hockey betting markets are tough to beat as a whole.

Then again, there are a lot of games where the home-ice advantage is mispriced based on the number of rest days the home team has compared to the road team. If you want to know more about this, check out Jeff Veillette’s weekly article where he details all of the mismatches of rest on the NHL schedule.

Team Money Leaders (Most and Least Profitable NHL Moneyline Bets)

Here’s an overview of the most and least profitable NHL moneyline bets this season. Bettors can compare a team’s cumulative profit month-to-month to find out whether teams have been trending up or down. This is based on betting one dollar on a team to win straight up in every game based on their closing moneyline odds.

The St. Louis Blues remain the NHL’s biggest surprise, from a betting perspective, after a 5-1 road win over the Boston Bruins on Monday. The Blues are still the most profitable bet so far this season. However, another Central Division team, the Nashville Predators, has come alive in the hockey betting market. If a bettor had placed a one-unit bet on the Predators to win each game this season they would have made approximately 6.59 units year-to-date.

Bet On Nashville To Beat Winnipeg

The Predators have been a particularly good bet on the road, too, and if you watched or listened to The Puck Portfolio today, you’d know that I recommended an early bet on Nashville to beat the Winnipeg Jets at +138 on Wednesday. Why? Well, Nashville has a 59 percent win rate on the road this season and they have been playing great hockey. Per Evolving Hockey, the Predators rank seventh in expected goals percentage in all situations and only the Toronto Maple Leafs have scored more goals per 60 minutes since the All-Star break.

Washington is another surprise. Despite their 3-0 loss in Winnipeg on Monday, the Capitals remain one of the league’s most profitable moneyline bets after winning seven of the previous 10 games. Meanwhile, other Metropolitan teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins and New Jersey Devils are trending in the opposite direction. Neither team had been a good bet throughout the season due to how consistently inconsistent they’ve been, but they’ve been especially bad as of late and they now rank as two of the worst teams, at least as far as the hockey betting market is concerned.
