IIHF World Championship Semifinal: Finland vs Canada Prediction, Picks, and Odds

Macklin Celebrini (17) of Canada takes a shot as Mikael Granlund (64) of Finland defends during the third period in a men's ice hockey semifinal during the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena

In this article, we’ll outline our best Finland vs. Canada prediction for Saturday’s semifinal clash of the IIHF World Championship, as well as the relevant betting notes for both teams, so you can place a winning wager with any of the best NHL betting sites.

Canada found its way past a young USA roster with a solid team performance and received an excellent showing in goal from underrated netminder Jet Greaves. The win came at a cost, though, as the team’s most heavily used defender, Evan Bouchard, left the game after taking a high hit and will not return to action in the tournament.

Finland earned its way into this game with a 4-1 win over Czechia, as Juustus Annunen continued his strong play in the tournament by stopping 25 of 26 shots. It will be looking to grab a small measure of revenge after Canada ended its bid for an Olympic gold medal with a 3-2 win when the two hockey powers last met.

In this article, I’ll outline my best bet for Saturday’s semifinal between Finland and Canada, as well as the relevant betting notes for both teams.

The Finnish program has become known for a high level of intensity and determined defensive play. It seems that regardless of who’s on the roster, there is top-to-bottom commitment to the smaller details that help lead to team success. We bought into a similar narrative when these teams met at the Olympics, and though the rosters are much different, a similar game script would not be overly surprising.

Finland will not want this matchup to open up and become somewhat of a track meet versus a Canadian side that does have plenty of elite offensive skaters. It will try to avoid critical breakdowns and make this game into a tight-checking slog, and likely won’t make any risky decisions with the puck in order to try and cheat for offence.

While the main reason we like this under is based on what Finland’s tactical approach will be, checking Canada’s elite forwards may be a slightly more reasonable goal to achieve than it seems, as Canada’s blue line does lack offensive upside and puck-moving ability.

The offensive upside and play-driving ability of the blue line were the only somewhat meaningful concerns of the roster entering the tournament and those potential weaknesses become a much greater concern with Evan Bouchard sidelined, as he was averaging close to 25 minutes a game.

Zach Whitecloud, Dylan DeMelo, and Darnell Nurse are, to varying degrees, solid enough defenders, but not the types to maximize the strengths of Canada’s stacked forward group. However, they should be able to handle assignments in their own zone effectively enough versus a Finnish lineup with only a few truly potent offensive scoring threats.

Betting Team Finland

Finland earned its spot in the semifinal with six wins and one loss in the Round Robin, playing to a goal differential of +18 and allowing 1.85 goals against per game. Its lone loss came in a tightly-contested game versus Switzerland, with a strong Swiss side earning a 4-2 win following an empty-netter.

Finland jumped out 2-0 lead early in the first in its quarterfinal versus Czechia, before Konsta Helenius linked up with Aleksander Barkov and Mikael Granlund to put the game to bed midway through the second. Finland did lean on Annunen to make 26 saves, but most of Czechia’s shots came once score effects took hold, and the Finns were safely nursing the multi-goal lead home.

Finland’s offensive depth is a clear weakness in this matchup, but it does have a legitimate top line led by Aleksander Barkov, which should be capable of hanging tough versus Canada’s top unit. Konsta Helenius had a strong showing for the Buffalo Sabres in Round 2 of the NHL playoffs and has had a solid start to the tournament.

Anton Lundell has also had a strong showing in the tournament and continues to offer a game featuring many similarities to that of Barkov.

Annunen played to a +8.3 GSAx rating and .906 save percentage across 28 starts for the Nashville Predators this season and ranked 11th in save percentage above expectation among goaltenders to make at least 25 starts.

Betting Team Canada

Without question, Canada has the best offensive core of any team in the tournament by a fairly considerable margin. Macklin Celebrini and Sidney Crosby have once again formed a dominant tandem on the top line, while the second unit of Dylan Holloway, Robert Thomas and Mark Scheifele has also been highly effective.

Ryan O’Reilly has been a strong presence on the third line and a useful Swiss Army knife, and relative to the rest of the roster’s in the tournament, there aren’t many holes to pick at up front.

As discussed, without Bouchard the blue-line does lack a little bit of puck-moving ability, and he was the clear-cut number-one defender on the team. Morgan Rielly will likely continue to quarterback the top power-play unit, which greatly hurts its upside, and Bouchard’s absence leaves Dylan DeMelo and Zach Whitecloud as the top two right side defenders.

The market has moved towards Finland overnight, while the total moved 20 cents towards the under. Both of those movements do make some sense to me, because as we have outlined it, it seems logical to expect Finland to be able to grind this matchup into somewhat of a competitive slog.

While Canada’s defensive core is obviously far from what it would be with a better turnout of high-end NHL talents, Jet Greaves has been a fantastic option in goal and could easily end up in the conversation for a spot on the 2028 World Cup of Hockey roster.

Greaves has played to a .944 save percentage and 1.33 GAA across six starts this tournament, following an excellent NHL campaign for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
