The semi-final games were concluded on Wednesday night, with Manchester City losing the second semifinal but going through with a 3-2 aggregate.
While the other semi-final also finished 3-2 after both legs. The game was a closely fought battle until Mahmoud Hassan snatched a goal late in the 93rd, resulting in Villa Park erupting into a pitch invasion and celebrations going on into the night.
The win sends Villa to Wembley Stadium on Sunday, March 3, 2020. The game will kickoff at 11:30 am (ET). Although the final is over a month away, we wanted to include it in our soccer free picks this week.
Will Man City win it for the third year in a row?
Manchester City (1.11) vs Aston Villa (6.00)
Manchester City hasn’t had one of their best seasons. Although they sit second in the league and will likely finish in that position, it’s just not the Man City we’re used to seeing.
Liverpool has been allowed to run away with the league before the season really got started. We know this will be of great frustration to Pep, which will only spur him on to succeed in the other competitions, namely the Champions League, FA Cup and this.
Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero have been the stand out goalscorers for the Sky-Blues this season. Sterling is now on 11 goals for the season overall, while the Argentine has tallied up 16 so far.
Aston Villa sits sixteenth in the league, 2 points above the drop zone. They’ve struggled to find the net this season and are led in goals by attacking midfielder Jack Grealish, who’s on 7 goals and 5 assists overall.
The soccer betting odds heavily favour a Manchester City win, which we tend to agree with.
Expect Manchester City to beat Aston Villa.
Manchester City to win & over 1.5 goals total (3.77)
Amazingly, despite the fact that Liverpool have won the league and it’s still January, Manchester City have a goal difference of +38, just three less than Liverpool’s +41.
There’s one thing to be sure of in this game, and that’s goals. Aston Villa has a goal difference in the league of -14. They will do very well to stop the likes of Aguero, Sterling, Bernado, Silva, and Kevin de Bruyne from finding the net.
It looked for a period of time, just before Christmas, like Manchester City, were in danger of totally losing their structure and identity. There were rumours of a departure for the Catalan conductor. But Pep stated his intentions to stay, and things started to level out.
Man City is still favourites to win the Champions League. The league aside, there is no doubt in our minds that they will progress to the latter stages of the Champions League, FA Cup and win this in March.
Take City to win & over 1.5 goals in total.
Raheem Sterling to score anytime (2.75)
Raheem has been enjoying his best season yet. He’s on 11 goals and 1 assist in the league while tallying 5 goals in 6 matches in Europe.
Sterling’s formidable form has ensured he is one of the first names on the teamsheet each week. We’ve mentioned his form in other competitions, but pertinently he’s managed 3 goals and 1 assist in four games in the League Cup.
It’s worth mentioning Jack Grealish, who has caught the attention of some of the top clubs, including Manchester United.
Jack has been in fine form this season and is carrying Villa on his back. He’s had a productive run in the League Cup in 2020, scoring 2 goals and assisting two. He assisted Matt Targett’s first goal in the win over Leicester.
Take Raheem Sterling to score anytime.
