NHL Free Picks and Predictions: February 28 - March 1

The Capitals still can’t get a string of wins going, after they were shutout by the Jets in 3-0 loss. They’ll face the Wild on Sunday night, which will be a tough fixture in Minnesota.

We kick things off with the Flames against the Lightning, who are still battling it out for the NHL and Atlantic Division leaders the Bruins for the top spot. We’ve got picks for a variety of other NHL teams.

Who will get the points this weekend?

Calgary Flames (3.33) @ Tampa Bay Lightning (1.92)

We wanted to put the Lightning in our weekends NHL free picks. They’ve been sensational this season, as they were last season, and we’re interested to see how things turn out in the Playoffs this time around.

The Lighting is joint-first in the league scoring tables, putting up an average of 3.5 goals per game. They go 40-19-5 for the season. However, Tampa has lost their last four games on the bounce and will need to turn things around here.

The Calgary Flames will be aware of the opportunity they have to get the win here, given the poor run of form of the Lightning. Elias Lindholm still leads the line for the Flames and will be counted on again in this one.

Sean Monahan is also finding the net at the moment, scoring twice against the Bruins to bring his total to 21 for the season overall.

Take the Lightning to win at home.

Vancouver Canucks (3.67) @ Toronto Maple Leafs (1.81)

The Vancouver Canucks are moving up the NHL power rankings this week, sitting twelfth in the standings. They’ll face a tough test on the road to their Canadian rivals.

The Toronto Maple Leafs enter this one looking to make it three wins in three, having taken two very important wins off the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning. They sit third in the highly competitive Atlantic Division.

The Maple Leafs are lead in the attack by the formidable Auston Matthews, who has scored 44 goals and 32 assists for the season so far. While teammate William Nylander has been in great form as well, scoring 29 goals and grabbing 28 assists for the season.

The Canucks pulled off an impressive 9-3 win over the league leaders the Bruin last week. Though they lost out to the struggling Sens in their last. They will face a different calibre of a team in this one.

Pick the Maple Leafs to win.

Washington Capitals (2.22) @ Minnesota Wild (2.79)

The Capitals go 3-6-1 in their last ten, which is pretty shocking considering what we’ve seen throughout the season. They were shutout by the Jets and will need to regroup against a Wild side that is playing well.

The Wild won 7-1 against the Red Wings in their last. Though Detroit is sitting ducks in almost any game they play in this season, the Wild were organized and disciplined on the ice.

Zach Parise leads the line for the Wild, picking up 21 goals and 17 assists for the season overall. Eric Staal is also finding the net, with 19 goals and a team-high 26 assists this campaign.

The Capitals are averaging the second-highest goals per game with 3.4, with Ovechkin now on 43 goals and 17 assists.

The NHL betting odds favour a win for the Capitals. Although they’re having a rough time at the moment, the white-hot stick of Ovechkin will always cause the Wild’s defence problems.

Expect the Capitals to win.
