NHL Picks: Who will make It to the Playoffs In 2020?

With the 2020 NHL Playoffs are just over 2 months away, we look to the Divisions to see who will make it this year. But with around 30 games left to play, who will take part come April 8th?

The regular season comes to a close on Saturday, April 4th, 2020. The playoffs start just 4 days later, with 16 of the 31 league teams making it to the playoffs.

There will be eight from each conference and the top three finishers of both divisions, as well as two wildcard teams that will go to the playoffs.

It’s pretty clear who will be there in April, but who will make a shock entry in 2020?

Vegas Golden Knights (14.00)

The Tampa Bay Lightning seems to be the favourite in the eyes of the masses; pundits, commentators and even some players have said Tampa will lift the Stanley Cup in 2020.

It may be clear for many, but it’s far from over. We will delve into the other teams that may come out on top at the end of the season.

The Golden Knights sit third in the Pacific Division, going 27-20-7 for the season overall. They sit sixth in the Western Conference, alongside their Pacific rivals the Calgary Flames.

Max Pacioretty (21g, 27a), Reilly Smith (21g, 21a), and Mark Stone (18g, 30a) have been integral to the Vegas offence this season. Though the team has much more depth and is strong in almost all positions.

The Vegas Golden Knights are actually the most improved team in the NHL power rankings at the moment. They have a +5 rating, as they go into their next game looking for third straight win.

Dallas Stars (15.00)

The Dallas Stars sit second in the Central Division, going 29-18-4 for the season so far. They’ve had a steady season and sit around 13th in the NHL.

The Stars are led in attack by Alexander Radulov, who has put up 15 goals per game and 16 assists for the season. Dallas has struggled in offence throughout this campaign. They are 25th in the league in average goals, with 2.6 per game.

But, Rick Bowness’s men have managed to maintain a stable position in the league and are shaping up well to grab a spot in the playoffs. This is mainly down to the Stars defensive record, which is the best in the league.

The Stars have let in 127 so far this campaign, allowing an average 2.31 per game. The Stars have an array of quality defensemen on their roster, the likes of John Klingberg, Jamie Oleksiak and Miro Heiskanen holding the line at the back.

Nashville Predators (27.00)

The Nashville Predators are currently 6th in the Central Division, 7 points adrift of the Division leaders and reigning Stanley Cup holders the St Louis Blues.

The Predators have struggled defensively, but offensively they have scored tenth most goals in the league with 167, averaging 3.3 goals per game.

In defence, it’s a different story. Nashville is allowing an average of 3.10 goals per game and has a goal difference of -1 for the 2019/20 campaign.

Granted this is poor. But we believe the Nashville roster can go up a few levels from where they are now. But with players like Roman Josi (14g, 37a), Matt Duchene (11g, 23a) and Filip Forsberg (18g, 9a) on the roster, they are more than capable of turning teams over on their day.

Given the quality the Predators have on their roster, they’re well worth a punt at 27.00. The NHL betting odds for Nashville are excellent and as such, we thought they deserved to be in our NHL free picks this week.
