2022 Pegasus World Cup Selections and Odds

The Pegasus World Cup (G1) is the first top-level handicap division race of the year! The $3 million race will be contested Saturday, January 29 over 1 1/8 miles at Gulfstream Park, and features nine of the top older male dirt horses in training. Some are concluding their careers, some are just getting their season started, and all of them are ready to shine on horse racing’s biggest stage!

This is the sixth edition of the Pegasus World Cup. Superstars like Arrogate and Gun Runner have won it during its short history. 2021 champion Knicks Go returns to try to become the first horse to win the Pegasus two times, though, with a rail post and some excellent competition, it will not be an easy task for him!

    Pegasus World Cup Favourites

Favourites typically farewell at the Pegasus World Cup: in its five runnings, all the winners have either been the betting favourite or the second choice. This year, #1 Knicks Go stands to be the chalk, with #4 Life Is Good likely to be a well-defined second choice.

Though Knicks Go won the Pegasus last year, he is an all-or-nothing horse: he typically either wins or runs off the board. And, though he has an extremely high cruising speed, he can run into trouble if he has to deal with other speed early, in the rare case he does run into a horse who can go as fast as he can early.

That is the trouble Knicks Go stands to run into this time around, with Life Is Good also in the field. Life Is Good comes in from the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, a race whose winners have won the Pegasus in two of the last three years. He has never run a bad race, and he has never failed to show sharp early speed. And, with a draw outside of Knicks Go, Life Is Good has the tactical advantage.  With a pedigree that makes the stretch to 1 1/8 miles interesting, expect him to lead all the way around.

    Pegasus World Cup Price Horses

Though shorter-priced horses have a record of winning the Pegasus, longshots have always hit the board. In all five runnings of the Pegasus World Cup, a horse at 10/1 or more has run either second or third, and some years both of those places are taken up by longshots.  Here are the longshots to play in your tickets underneath Life Is Good.

#8 Endorsed has been sprinting a lot lately, but both of his attempts at a mile and an eighth have resulted in second-place finishes in stakes races at the high-quality Saratoga meet. He has the tactical speed to stay in range throughout the race, and in four starts over the Gulfstream dirt Endorsed has never missed the board. This gives him an excellent chance to hit the board.

#3 Stilleto Boy is a consistent horse. Though he has not won since the Iowa Derby last year, he has hit the board several times against top-quality companies, including a second-place finish behind Medina Spirit in the Awesome Again (G1) last year at Santa Anita. With tactical speed and the ability to take his best game all the way around the country, he should show up well again.

#5 Empty Tomb is historically strong at a mile and an eighth, with five of seven of his attempts at the distance resulting in money finishes. Though he does not quite have the early speed of the two favourites, he will not be too far off of them under aggressive and high-percentage Gulfstream Park rider Paco Lopez. Though this is a class test for Empty Tomb, he has the tools to nab an underneath share.
