Italy’s Odds to win the World Cup

Italy has qualified for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, and early futures winners odds stand at 15.00. The success of the Italian national football team means they’ve always been given fairly favourable winners odds.

The Azzurri’s success has meant they have long-standing rivalries with various other top footballing nations, such as Brazil, Germany, France, and their Mediterranean rivals Spain. As of today (February 27, 2020), Italy is thirteenth in the FIFA World Rankings - a steep fall since the days of occupying the first place.

Can Italy return to glory in 2022?

Italy’s FIFA World Cup History

The Azzurri has been about since 1910. The distinct savoy blue of the national side is based on the traditional paint of the royal House of Savoy, which reigned over the Kingdom of Italy from 1860-1946. They’re governed by UEFA and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). Italy’s home matches are played at various stadiums throughout Italy, the San Siro in Milan for example, with their main training ground held, Centro Tecnico Federale di Coverciano, which is located in the beautiful countryside of Tuscany, in Florence.

Italy is one of the most successful national sides in the long history of the World Cup, having won four titles (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006) joint-second with Germany and second only to Brazil. Italy also appeared in two other finals, in 1970 and in the USA world cup in 1994 which was also won by the Brazilians.

Tragedy struck in 1949 when the majority of the Italy national football team was killed in a plane crash, known as the Superga air disaster. Aside from the difficulty of overcoming the loss of so many significant figures in Italian culture, the national side was struggling to put together a team. They didn’t advance past the group stage of the following two World Cup tournaments, and also didn’t qualify for the 1958 edition.

Italy returned to form in 1968, winning a European Championship. In recent years, the Azzurri’s International success led them to the Euro’s finals in 2000 and 2012. They qualified for every major competition for the years that followed, until the 2018 Russia World Cup. This was a real low-point for Italian football. Having already qualified for the 2022 World Cup, the Azzurri will look to reinstate their country’s name as one of the elites in International football.
