NFL Super Bowl LVIII Opening Line Report: 49ers Open As Small Favourites Over Chiefs

It didn’t take long for NFL bettors to send oddsmakers scrambling to adjust their opening lines for Super Bowl LVIII.

Just minutes after the San Francisco 49ers staged an impressive comeback victory over the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday night, sportsbooks posted their respective moneyline odds, spreads, and totals for Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11 between the Kansas City Chiefs, who claimed a 17-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game earlier on Sunday, and the aforementioned 49ers.

Oddsmakers at bet365 opened the spread at 49ers -2, but within a few hours, they moved that number to San Francisco -1 as money quickly came pouring in on the underdog Chiefs. Some other online sportsbooks opened with San Francisco -2.5 and saw similar action on the Chiefs. As of Monday morning, the spread has settled around 49ers -1 or -1.5 at most online shops.

As for the total, it opened at 47.5 points at bet365 and has remained there overnight. Most online sportsbooks opened at either 47.5 points or 48, and that number has held overnight into Monday morning.

The underdogs are a solid 8-4 against the spread to this point in these NFL playoffs and are 16-6 ATS (against the spread) in the past 22 Super Bowls. Another fun betting trend: The team that is the higher playoff seed (the 49ers in this year’s case) is just 2-15-2 ATS in the past 26 Super Bowls (in eight of those Super Bowl matchups teams had equal seeding), according to VSiN.

In the 55 Super Bowl games that have had posted totals, the over/under record is 28-27-1. The teams have combined to average 46.5 points per game in those contests.
