THE CANADIAN PREMIER LEAGUE IS HERE!

Have no doubt that the Canadian Premier League will soon become a household name. Their first season kicked off on April 27, 2019. But now in its fifth season, the CPL is sharing the soccer market share with the MLS and USL, with the quality of play improving year after year. With branding that symbolizes the beauty of the Canadian cultural mosaic and love for the beautiful game of soccer, the CPL is striving to carve out a unique niche.

Canadian Premier League is vying for a spot on the busy North American sports landscape. A mix of young Canadians and experienced veterans should be a recipe for success.

Further backing the fact that this is indeed a Canadian League, a maximum of seven foreign players are allowed per squad and at least six of eleven starters must be Canadian. Showing their dedication to building the sport through youth, at least three Canadian starters must be under the age of 21. The league’s ambitions allow for competitive play while developing the domestic program.

Once Canadian Premier League Odds become available on major sportsbooks and attract the eye of online bettors, they will be just as legitimate as any other establishment. The primary platform to watch the CPL is OneSoccer, a MediaPro-owned platform that is very familiar to fans of the Canadian national teams.

Played mostly in cozy venues, only three of the seven CPL stadiums seat over 10,000 fans. The remaining five venues hold less than 8,000 spectators. This will definitely start out as a league for smaller crowds, and hence smaller revenues. Two salary caps, one for players and one for coaches, are in place.

Teams can spend between $750,000 and $1.125 million on their rosters, with minimum salaries set at $30,000. Teams are given salary cap relief when signing players under the age of 21, further incentivizing development.

Available CPL Vegas Odds

Bettors have many exciting and profitable ways to bet on “The Beautiful Game”. Top online sportsbooks list soccer betting odds, numbering in the thousands on a daily basis. Here are some of the Canadian Premier League wagering methods.

CPL Money Line Odds

In the second-ever CPL match at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, favourite Cavalry FC protected their home turf with a 1-0 win over Valour FC. Calgary fans had their original $163 bet returned and banked $100 on CPL money line wagers. Had the teams played to a Draw, those bettors would have banked a $275 profit. Punters playing underdog Valour FC lost $100 hoping for a $333 bankroll boost. Pre-match CPL straight-up wagering lines are presented like this:

Cavalry FC 1.613.754.33Valour FC

CPL Against The Spread Odds

Being as soccer is a low-scoring sport, CPL against the spread odds are presented with low +/- goal numbers. Favourites receive from -1.0 to +2.5 goals while underdogs are tagged with ATS odds between +1.0 and -2.5 goals. Negative goal numbers pay the highest return on both sides. In our example below, a 2-0 win by home favourite Pacific FC, over visiting York9 FC pups, would pay a sweet $235 return on the -1.0 against the spread line here:

Pacific FC (FAV)ATSATSYork9 FC (DOG)
-1.0 3.351.32+1.0
0.0 1.652.300.0
+0.5 1.422.75-0.5
+1.0 1.155.00-1.0

CPL Total Goals Odds

When placing bets on CPL total goals odds, there are two burning questions. 1) Are the young players filling the nets? 2) Is a lack of experience forcing teams to be more defence-minded? CPL goal total numbers are often posted in the 2.5 to 3.0 range. On a 2-1 final score, OVER pays $100 on $115 bets while UNDER bettors lose $105 trying to earn a $100 profit on these game total odds:

OVERPRICEUNDERPRICE
2.5 1.872.51.95

CPL Prop and Futures Odds

Once the league is more established, punters can expect a flood of CPL futures and prop odds betting options. Soccer-focused bookmakers need a little time to examine the latest True North sports league. Based on what is popular on Major League Soccer betting boards, Canadian sportsbooks will offer bets like “Anytime Goal Scorer” player props and “Correct Score” team props.

Futures odds are relatively limited still, though the league’s official partner TonyBet is always guaranteed to have them when other books might not.

What is the Canadian Premier League?

The Canadian Premier League, or CPL was announced in 2017 and launched in 2019 as part of an effort to grow professional soccer in Canada. It’s the highest level of Canadian-specific professional play, putting them ahead of the League1 pro-am system and various amateur leagues.

As part of its status, CPL teams can qualify for the CONCACAF Champions Cup and Canadian Championship, granting them the ability to play against even better opponents. Theoretically, a CPL team could use this path to make it all the way to the FIFA Club World Cup.

The goal of the CPL is to bring the professional soccer experience to more than just the biggest Canadian cities. It also gives rising young Canadian talent a place to play, if teams in other countries haven’t yet scouted them.

Canadian Premier League vs MLS

Technically speaking, the Canadian Premier League isn’t at the same level as Major League Soccer, the top domestic league in the United States which features Canada’s three highest-level teams.

Rather than join the new league, Toronto FC, CF Montreal, and the Vancouver Whitecaps remained in MLS. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t any crossover, though, as those three teams will occasionally face CPL teams in friendlies and in the Canadian Championship.

Generally, MLS teams fare much better in these head-to-head matchups, with higher-end star players and significantly higher payrolls. With that said, CPL teams have continued to close the gap with each year.

From a betting perspective, there are significantly more MLS betting options available due to the size and scope of the markets, though this could also change over time.

How Does the CPL Season Work?

Eight squads will play a total of 28 games, 14 home and 14 away. Typically, teams begin their season in early-mid April, and end them in October. The league initially launched with a split-season format, but has since gone to a more standardized full season.

Best of the Best Compete for the CPL Championship

With just eight teams in the table, the league has to get creative with its playoff format. Initially, only the top two teams in the standings would go straight to a playoff final.

Nowadays, five teams find themselves in the mix. First, the teams in fourth and fifth place face each other in a play-in round, with the winner advancing to the quarter-finals. They go on to face the team that finishes in third, for a spot in the semi-finals.

At the top, the teams in first and second face each other in their own series. The winner goes straight to the finals. The loser faces the surviving team from the 3-4-5 battle in the semi-finals, giving them a potential second shot at the team they just lost to.

This is exactly what happened in 2023. Second overall Forge FC defeated first-overall Cavalry FC in their first playoff game, Cavalry FC stayed alive by beating Pacific FC in the semi-finals, and then Forge beat them again in the final.

CPL Soccer Teams 2024

The fifth CPL season features eight Canadian Premier League teams. Six of the teams have been with the league since it’s launched, while Atletico Ottawa joined in 2020 and Vancouver FC joined in 2023.

FC Edmonton was a founding team, but folded in 2022.

  • Atlético Ottawa (Ottawa, Ontario)
  • Cavalry FC (Calgary, Alberta)
  • Forge FC (Hamilton, Ontario)
  • HFX Wanderers FC (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
  • Pacific FC (Langford, British Columbia)
  • Valour FC (Winnipeg, Manitoba)
  • Vancouver FC (Langley, British Colombia)
  • York United FC (Toronto, Ontario)

Future Expansions

The CPL has ambitions for a 16-team league, hoping to get there in time for the 2026 World Cup, which Canada will be co-hosting.

Markets that are being considered include St. John’s, Moncton, Laval, Quebec City, Kitchener-Waterloo, Niagara Region, Durham Region, Mississauga, Regina, Saskatoon, Kelowna, Fraser Valley, Barrie, Montreal, and Saint John.
