Our Penguins vs. Capitals prediction for Wednesday night is Over 6.5 goals, but we’re keeping this a cautious, small-sample recommendation rather than a high-confidence NHL bet.
Pittsburgh visits Washington at Capital One Arena on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026, with puck drop scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Both teams enter this NHL regular-season matchup looking to bounce back from losses, and it will be one of the final times Sidney Crosby squares off against Alex Ovechkin, who plans to retire at the end of the season.

Penguins vs. Capitals Prediction
Over 6.5 goals (-110)
Pittsburgh has scored 15 goals and allowed eight through its first three regular-season games, while Washington has scored six and allowed five through two. The Penguins’ early offensive production gives us the clearest reason to lean towards a game with at least seven goals.
The combined totals across those five games were 7, 11, 5, 7, and 4 goals, with three clearing 6.5 and two staying under. That favours the Over so far, but five games do not establish a dependable scoring trend.
The strongest counterargument is what happened in each team’s latest outing: Pittsburgh lost 3–2 to Winnipeg, and Washington lost 3–1 to Tampa Bay. Neither attack produced enough that night to make seven combined goals look like an easy ask. The early goaltending numbers also offer some resistance, although they come from just one or two starts.
We’re taking Over 6.5 at -110 with modest confidence, but would not chase a substantially shorter number.

Betting Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh’s 2–1 start includes a 7–0 victory in its only road game. That is an encouraging glimpse of the offence’s upside, not a road scoring rate we can reasonably expect it to maintain.
Declan Carlile and Ben Kindel scored in the Oct. 5 loss to Winnipeg, when the Penguins were outshot 35–31. The two-goal return is a reminder that generating attempts and delivering a high-scoring night are different things.
Bryan Rust remains day-to-day with an upper-body injury. NHL.com reported that he practised in full on Oct. 6 and could make his season debut against Washington. Coach Dan Muse said they “still need to have some conversations” before deciding. We’re not counting on Rust’s return when backing the total.
Justin Brazeau and Ryan Graves are out with lower-body injuries.
Betting Washington Capitals
Washington enters at 1–1 after its Oct. 3 loss to Tampa Bay. Justin Sourdif scored the Capitals’ lone goal, and the Lightning held a 30–21 advantage in shots on goal. That limited attacking output is the less comfortable side of our Over bet: Pittsburgh’s offence may have to do more of the work if Washington struggles to generate chances again.
Rasmus Sandin is out with a knee injury, while Matt Roy is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Those concerns on defence are worth noting, but they are not enough on their own to assume the Capitals will concede more goals.
Alex Ovechkin has announced that 2026–27 will be his final NHL season. In his address to teammates, he said, “It’s hard, but let’s enjoy it and let’s do some special things this year.” It adds an emotional backdrop to Wednesday’s matchup, even if it gives us no reason to expect a higher total.
