The New York Islanders are scheduled to visit the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 7:30 p.m. ET. Toronto lost its regular-season opener 3–2 at home to Montreal on Tuesday, while New York has yet to play a 2026 regular-season game.

We’re taking the under, but this is a measured play rather than a bet built on a season-long scoring trend. The more compelling reason to consider the total is how Toronto looked while trying to bring its new lineup together in the opener.
After the loss to Montreal, coach Jim Hiller said a shortened training camp and preseason had left a team with many new faces needing time to find cohesion. “We just weren’t connecting with our passes,” he said. “We just weren’t clean as a team.” That is an assessment of one night, but it gives us a reason to be cautious about expecting Toronto’s attack to click immediately.
The Islanders play a defensive style of hockey with elite netminder Ilya Sorokin in goal, allowing 2.88 goals per game last season, which was tied for the fifth-fewest in the NHL.
With Toronto playing the second leg of a back-to-back after a shortened training camp and preseason, the legs might just not be there yet for the Maple Leafs, especially in the later portion of the game.

Betting New York Islanders
New York scored 233 goals and allowed 241 in 82 games in the 2024–25 regular season. That gives some perspective on its scoring profile, though it says little about how the Islanders will look in their first 2026 regular-season game. It is not enough on its own to make an under attractive.
Mathew Barzal is on injured reserve with a knee injury. His absence matters when weighing the Islanders’ attacking options, but it does not eliminate the possibility that New York finds goals against a Toronto lineup still coming together.

William Nylander scored both Toronto goals against Montreal, and Kirill Marchenko supplied an assist and four shots on goal among eight shot attempts in his Leafs debut.

The Islanders have the potential to be the lowest scoring team in the NHL this season, and without top forward Mathew Barzal, creating offence could be incredibly difficult on Wednesday night against Toronto.
On the other side, Toronto has the tough task of playing a back-to-back right out of the gate, which is daunting considering the short training camp and preseason this year. Soreness and fatigue will definitely play a factor for the Maple Leafs in this contest, so we’re betting on a sluggish start from an offensive perspective.
Expect both teams to play conservatively out of the gate and back the Under 1.5 goals in the first period.
