CSB’s N.O.R.T.H. Rating System
How We Review Sportsbooks & Online Casinos
Learn how we review sportsbooks and online casinos below using our N.O.R.T.H. rating
system to determine which oddsmakers are the best of the bunch!
At Canada Sports Betting (CSB), we’ve been at the forefront of the Canadian iGaming industry for over 15 years, and provide expert insight and analysis across dozens of the biggest online casinos and sportsbooks in Canada. Check out how the N.O.R.T.H. rating methodology works below with our thorough breakdown, and see how you can use this system to find the oddsmaker that’s right for you.
The N.O.R.T.H Rating System
N.O.R.T.H. breaks a sportsbook into five areas, and those five areas break down further into ten rated measures. Each measure is scored out of 100%, then weighted into one overall rating out of 5.

The weights aren’t even, because the parts of a sportsbook aren’t equally important. Odds pricing follows you through every bet you place, so it carries the most. Live streaming is a nice thing to have and carries the least. Here’s the full breakdown:
N — Navigation, Betting App, & User Experience
A pivotal part of any online betting experience is making sure that the operator offers an easy-to-navigate betting interface for you to use. This means that you’re able to find your favourite sports betting markets and casino games with ease, and the betting site has fast loading speeds and no tech issues.
- Website Experience (10%): We time the load speeds, count the clicks it takes to get from the homepage to a market we actually want, and put the bet slip through its paces with a parlay and a few alt lines. Strong search, a layout that doesn’t bury the sportsbook under casino tiles, and extras like stats feeds and form guides that work rather than decorate all earn points in our books.
- Betting App (10%): We download it, use it for a full session, and note whether it holds up. That covers store availability on both iOS and Android, how quickly it opens on mid-range hardware, whether it carries the same markets as the desktop site, biometric login, push notifications you can actually control, and whether the thing crashes. A book with no Android app doesn’t automatically score badly, but we’ll tell you it’s missing and tell you what the mobile site does instead.
O — Odds & Offers
Each of the top online betting sites in Canada provide players with competitive odds and offers. This includes how early odds are released, so you can grab the best value ahead of the market.
- Odds Value (20%): The heaviest weight on the page, and the one we refuse to hand-wave. Rather than calling a book’s pricing competitive and moving on, we capture a fixed basket of markets at the same moment across every sportsbook we cover — NHL moneylines and pucklines, NFL and NBA spreads and totals, MLB run lines, CFL spreads, soccer 1X2, UFC fights, a sample of player props, and a full-field futures market. We measure the vig on each and compare the average against every other book in the basket. A book that shaves the juice on NHL and CFL is worth real money to a Canadian bettor over a season, and the rating reflects that. We also factor in how early a book posts its lines. Odds released days ahead give you time to shop and catch value before the market moves. A book that waits until game day is offering less, however good the price when it finally lands.
- Sign up Offers and Promos (5%): We judge offers on what they’re worth after the terms, not on the number in the headline. A $1,000 deposit match carrying a 40x wagering requirement asks for $40,000 in wagers before it converts to withdrawable cash, and we’d rather point you at a smaller offer you can realistically clear. Expiry windows, minimum odds floors, and which bets qualify all get weighed. Ongoing promos count for more of this rating than the welcome offer does. The sign up offer happens once. The odds boosts, parlay insurance, early payout, and loyalty rewards are what you live with for the rest of the season, so they carry the section. T&Cs apply to everything we describe.

R — Real-Time Betting & Market Depth
When placing bets online, it’s paramount that you are doing so with an online betting site with adequate market depth, league coverage, and preferably live betting options too. Most sites now also offer live streaming, so we also score sites on available coverage.
- Markets and Coverage (10%): Two halves, weighted evenly. Breadth is how many sports and leagues a book carries, and we hold Canadian bettors’ priorities front and centre: the NHL, CFL, PWHL, CPL, and CHL matter here as much as the American majors. Depth is what you can actually bet within them. A book can advertise 40 sports and still post nothing beyond moneyline, spread, and total, so we check the player props, alt lines, same game parlays, bet builders, and how far ahead the futures go.
- Live Betting (10%): We watch a full event and bet it live. That tells us how deep the in-play menu runs, how quickly the odds refresh after a goal or a score, how often markets get suspended, and whether cash out works when there’s something on the line. A live menu that only offers the next-goal market, or that suspends every 30 seconds, gets rated as the limitation it is.
- Live Streaming (5%): The lightest weight, and the one with the widest gap between books. We check which leagues are actually available, the picture quality, the latency against the live broadcast, and whether streaming works on the app as well as desktop. We also state the conditions plainly, because “live streaming available” means something different when it requires a funded account and a settled wager in the past 24 hours.
T — Transactions, Security, & Trust
How you bet is almost as important as where you bet, so making sure that a betting site offers multiple banking options and fast transaction speeds is critical to a positive betting experience. The online betting sites on CSB not only offer several reliable and trustworthy banking methods for both deposits and withdrawals, but also process these payments in a timely manner. In addition, each of the top online betting sites featured on CSB utilize in-depth cybersecurity practices to ensure that your betting experience remains safe and secure, protecting you from any outside threats.
- Banking and Payouts (15%): Withdrawals carry 10 of this rating’s 15 points and deposits carry 5, because deposits barely differ between books and withdrawals are where bettors get burned. We look at the method range, Interac e-Transfer support, fees, minimums, and caps. Then we look at the gap between the two sides, since a book that takes your Interac deposit instantly and pays you back by cheque a fortnight later has a problem no amount of market depth fixes. Verification handled at sign up rather than sprung on you at your first cash out earns points. Crypto deposits and withdrawals are assessed where a book offers them.
- Trust and Security (5%): Licensing, track record, and how a book treats you when something goes wrong. We confirm provincial licensing separately for each market, because Ontario eligibility never implies Alberta eligibility. We read the terms for the clauses that bite — maximum win limits, dormancy fees, voiding rules — and we check the responsible gambling toolkit. Deposit limits, loss limits, time reminders, and self-exclusion should be easy to find and easy to switch on, not buried four menus deep.

H — Help & Customer Support
If you ever run into an issue while placing bets online, you want to be sure that someone has your back. That’s why we take the available help and customer support options into account when evaluating the best online betting sites in Canada. From 24/7 live chat, customer support emails, helplines, and even detailed FAQs, each of the best online betting sites in Canada provides numerous ways to receive knowledgeable, friendly, and fast assistance.
- Customer Service (10%): We put the same three questions to every sportsbook we cover. One simple, one specific, and one awkward, like why a bet was voided or graded the way it was. Then we log which channels exist, how long it took to reach a human, and whether the answer was right. A chat bot that loops you through five canned replies before offering a handoff scores very differently from one that gets out of the way. Phone lines, email response times, and a help centre that resolves the common stuff without you having to contact anyone at all all factor in.
What Our Scores Mean
Every review carries section ratings as percentages and one overall rating out of 5. Here’s how to read the overall number:
- 4.5 to 5.0: Among the strongest sportsbooks available to Canadians, with no meaningful weak spot.
- 4.0 to 4.4: A strong book that trails the leaders in one or two areas we’ll name in the review.
- 3.5 to 3.9: Solid, and the right choice for some bettors depending on what you care about most.
- 3.0 to 3.4: Gets the job done, with gaps real enough to send some readers elsewhere.
- Below 3.0: Falls short somewhere that matters, and we’ll say exactly where.
We score in half-point steps rather than pretending we can tell an 8.7 from an 8.8, and a section rating above 90% has to be backed by a specific reason in the writing underneath it. If the prose names a genuine flaw and the score doesn’t reflect it, the score is wrong.
What Our Ratings Can’t Tell You
A rating system that claims to answer everything isn’t worth much.
The first is that the best book for us isn’t automatically the best book for you. A reader who bets same game parlays on the NBA and a reader who wants their money back in their account by morning are shopping for different things. Our weights reflect what matters to most Canadian bettors most of the time, so read the section ratings that speak to your betting rather than stopping at the overall number.
The second is that a rating is a snapshot. Apps get rebuilt, payment methods disappear, promos get restructured, and licences change hands. We re-score every book we cover on a quarterly basis and immediately whenever something material changes, and every review carries the date it was last checked. If you spot something that’s moved since we looked, tell us.
Betting should stay within what you can comfortably afford to lose. Every book we rate offers deposit limits, time reminders, and self-exclusion tools, and how well they’re implemented is part of the Trust and Security rating. Please play responsibly.

Canada Sports Betting Trusted by Top Brands

Every sportsbook is scored against ten measures grouped under our N.O.R.T.H. system: odds value, banking and payouts, the betting app, website experience, markets and coverage, live betting, customer service, promotions, trust and security, and live streaming. Each measure carries a fixed weight, and the weighted total produces one rating out of 5.
Odds value, at 20% of the overall score. Pricing affects every bet you place, so a book that consistently runs lower vig is worth more to you over a season than one with a bigger sign up offer.
No. CSB earns a commission when readers sign up through our links, and that relationship affects nothing inside the rating. Commercial arrangements can’t move a score, and our reviews name the weaknesses of books we partner with.
Every book is re-scored quarterly, and immediately whenever something material changes, such as a new app release, a payment method being pulled, or a change in provincial licensing. Each review shows the date it was last checked.
Yes. Ratings for live betting, app stability, support response times, and withdrawal speed come from writers using funded accounts on the platform, because those things can’t be assessed from a marketing page.
