2026 World Cup Power Rankings

Argentina forward Lionel Messi (10) dribbles the ball against Puerto Rico during the first half at Chase Stadium

Anticipation for the 2026 World Cup is growing as we close in on the final two months before soccer’s biggest event kicks off in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. With several 2026 World Cup power ranking favourites occupying high places, the contenders near the top of the list won’t surprise anybody. But our rankings feature teams that are poised to break out and produce surprises after the action starts June 11.

Here are our FIFA World Cup 2026 team rankings (top 10):

Heavyweights to beat

1. Spain (FIFA Word Ranking: 2)

The future is bright for 2026 World Cup power ranking-favourite Spain. With budding superstars Lamine Yamal and Pedri leading a La Roja squad bursting with talent, Spain has the best shot at winning the 2026 World Cup. On the heels of a dominating Euro 2024 triumph, Spain has only gotten better in the two years since hoisting the continental title. Spain should have no problem breezing by in a somewhat comfortable group with Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, and Cape Verde. Head coach Luis de la Fuente’s side won’t be unstoppable, but Spain will definitely be one of the hardest teams to get a point against.

2. France (FIFA World Ranking: 1)

France has all of the pieces to get to a third consecutive World Cup final. Kylian Mbappe will be the focal point in Didier Deschamps’ squad, but players such as 2025 Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, Michael Olise, and others will be key pillars that need to perform for Les Bleus to win a third World Cup title. France’s attack might be the most talented at the 2026 World Cup, while its back line is made up of reliable defenders. France will be tested early in a tough group with old foe Senegal and Norway, but there shouldn’t be any cause for concern about failing to reach the round of 32.

Next wave of challengers

3. Argentina (FIFA World Ranking: 3)

All eyes will be on Argentina, especially if Lionel Messi laces up his boots for one last World Cup. The 38-year-old hasn’t been in a rush to confirm his involvement yet, but all signs point to the Inter Miami star returning for his fifth World Cup. While it might not seem like there’s much incentive after playing a pivotal role in helping Argentina win the 2022 World Cup, Messi will have a chance to achieve something his idol Diego Maradona couldn’t and deliver a second consecutive world title to the soccer-crazed nation.

4. England (FIFA World Ranking: 4)

It’s win or bust for England. After strong performances in recent major tournaments—reaching back-to-back Euros finals and a World Cup semifinal in 2018—England will hope this is the year that the infamous 60-year World Cup drought ends. One of the biggest talking points will be the selection dilemmas facing coach Thomas Tuchel, whose recent decision to omit Trent Alexander-Arnold caused shockwaves in the English press. He’s going to have to get his selection right, as England has been lumped into a tricky group with Croatia, Ghana, and Panama.

5. Brazil (FIFA World Ranking: 6)

Led by serial winner Carlo Ancelotti, Brazil appears to have the tactical stability needed to win the World Cup for the first time since 2002. While Brazil is no longer the unstoppable threat of the past, the five-time World Cup winner will still be one of the most talented teams at the tournament. Headlined by attacking stars Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, and Joao Pedro, Brazil also boasts a solid defence with Gabriel Magalhaes and captain Marquinhos leading the back line. Brazil takes on Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland in the opening round.

High-potential pack

6. Portugal (FIFA World Ranking: 5)

Cristiano Ronaldo’s role at the World Cup might be in doubt, but Portugal’s place as a legitimate contender is not. While there’s uncertainty over how Ronaldo will be deployed at his sixth—and likely last—World Cup, nobody doubts that Portugal has the firepower to win the country’s first World Cup. Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Rafael Leao are the foundation for a team tipped to go far at the 2026 World Cup.

7. Germany (FIFA World Ranking: 10)

Germany will be out for revenge at the 2026  World Cup in an effort to make up for being humiliated at the last two editions of the tournament. Group stage exits in 2018 and 2022 stunned the European side, leading to demands for a complete overhaul of the men’s national team. While there are hopes that this Germany is back to its usual dominating form, a difficult group—with Ecuador, Ivory Coast, and Curacao—could spell disaster if Germany’s issues snowball out of control.

8. Netherlands (FIFA World Ranking: 7)

It wasn’t as bad as Germany’s downfall, but the Netherlands endured similar struggles in the years since finishing second at the 2010 World Cup. Defence has fueled the nation’s revival in recent years, led by imposing captain Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch midfield is just as formidable, with impact players such as  Tijjani Reijnders, Ryan Gravenberch, Xavi Simons, and Frenkie de Jong. The nation faces a tough matchup to begin the World Cup against Japan.

Dark horses

9. Ecuador (FIFA World Ranking: 23)

The toughest team to score against in CONMEBOL qualifying, Ecuador enters the 2026 World Cup with confidence and belief in a defensive structure that produced 13 clean sheets in 18 games against South American opposition. Ecuador’s attack pales in comparison to the defence, scoring just 14 goals in qualifying, But as long as the defence continues to shine, Ecuador has a great chance for a lengthy World Cup campaign.

10. Senegal (FIFA World Ranking: 14)

Senegal enters the World Cup with mixed emotions. After winning the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, the continental title was then awarded to Morocco two months later after a controversial decision to overturn the result. A devastating blow, for sure, but perhaps the team can use the heartbreak to rally together in an effort to win an even bigger prize. Although Senegal has been lumped into a tough group with France, Norway, and Iraq, the unofficial champion of Africa will have a chip on its shoulder that could possibly lead to something special.

Bonus

25. Canada (FIFA World Ranking: 30)

Canada avoided playing Italy in the first-ever World Cup game on Canadian soil. But that doesn’t guarantee a spot in the knockout round for a nation still searching for its first point at the tournament. While nobody is expecting Canada to challenge for the title, coach Jesse Marsch’s squad is full of excitement and has the potential to make things interesting in a relatively comfortable group with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Switzerland, and Qatar.
