Methodology overview

First, teams were ranked by total confirmed money lost from NHL fines and forfeited salary linked to suspensions. In addition, the dataset includes player fines, suspension salary forfeitures and league fines issued to teams or coaches.

  • Then, NHL.com league and Player Safety releases were used to verify official discipline where available.
  • Next, Spotrac fine data was used to identify and cross-check fine amounts.
  • In those cases where the league confirmed a suspension but did not publish a dollar figure, the salary forfeiture was calculated using the NHL CBA method and clearly marked as calculated.
  • Finally, hearing notices, rumours, duplicate pages, off-ice misconduct cases and incidents without a confirmed punishment or monetary impact were excluded.
