Power Rankings Offer Valuable NFL Handicapping Information

Arrived at various angles, from rudimentary to exotic, different formulas are used to form the wide variety of Power Ranking charts available. Websites backed by billions have access to every NFL stat, employ mathematicians to add up and dissect the numbers and hire smart people who bring algorisms into the mix. That said, like everyone else, they don’t have crystal balls so their NFL rankings are usually by the numbers without much human opinion. NFL.com, major American sports broadcasters, plus well-read print media outlets, are in this group.

Opinions, plenty of them, do come out of the big voices as comments are added below the ranking of each team. Often informative, though seemingly incomplete at times, all human advice should be processed as opinions – everyone has them. Information sites with limited resources, there are many, will create their power rankings using major stat categories only. Points for and against, offence and defence rankings, plus the standings, is a common mix. Stat tracking must be 100% error-free – which is why we always carefully harvest our own numbers.

“Not all Power Ranking information is created equally – Use trusted sources”

Attention to detail is required, and the process can be time-consuming, but anyone with a computer and web access can create an information-packed NFL Power Ranking list. Getting started with a preseason ranking is important, as weekly updates will easily fall in line after that. By either going directly to the league website or searching for the Stats LLC logo at sites that are easier to harvest information at, pulling different stats helps create a proprietary Power Ranking. This is not a time to be lackadaisical as accurate stats are the backbone of betting research.

Posted in all shapes and sizes, NFL power rankings can be as simple as looking at the current standings. As we were creating this feature (12/11/18) the National Football League was closing the books on Week 10 of the 2018 season. Looking at the rankings, overall and by conference, it wasn’t difficult to figure out which squads were the NFL futures powerhouse crews. Strictly by their win count, the KC Chiefs and LA Rams (9-1) plus NO Saints (8-1) were powering towards regular-season Division Championships as high-octane Super Bowl Sunday contenders.

“Current Overall +/- Points differential is a key Power Ranking component”

Beyond wins and losses, which should be reviewed individually, there are plenty of facts that can be uncovered by studying the standings. Points for and against is a good place to start, as high scoring teams, that are fielding a decent defense, are tough to beat. Outlined in our table below, Super Bowl contenders are often at or near the top of the PF/PA differential category. As with all trends, there are some outliers that are tough to read prior to the playoffs. Apart from Giants fans, very few saw New York knocking out New England during Super Bowl 46.

Use Power Ranking Research At Top NFL Online Sportsbooks

In-season strength of schedule (SOS) is a key Power Ranking factor. While preseason SOS uses statistics from previous NFL seasons – tracking in progress team runs gives bettors a sharper handicapping key. Chicago was an example in 2018 as the Bears (5-3) were first in the NFC North with wins against teams at a combined 14-23 record. A light SOS factored in Chicago’s #10 ranking at ESPN. It also played a role in Da’ Bears ranking twelfth on the SportsInteraction Super Bowl 53 futures board. Remember, those odds are available for betting 24/7.

NFL power rankings offer informative betting nuggets and should be part of every handicapping toolbox. Often compact to view, near-infinite information is packed into the lists, they are easy to find, plus comparing them to other lists is simple. It’s wise to remember that some power rankings are constructed with to date data and without much consideration of games yet to be played. Research journey complete – Placing wagers is quick and secure at top-ranked online sportsbooks. These bookmakers are NFL veterans and offer fantastic football wagering action.
