Bet On Italy’s Rugby Games

Rugby has been around in Italy for nearly 100 years, and throughout the twentieth century the Italians were considered to be the best European nation outside of 5 Nations participants France, England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. It wasn’t until the year 2000 that Italy finally joined in on the tournament, creating the Six Nations in the process, and they have built slowly over the last decade or so into a more than competitive side.

While Italy normally hover anywhere between fifteenth and tenth in the official rugby world rankings, they are perhaps one of the most consistent teams in the world. They have made it to all eight World Cups, although haven’t progressed past the group stage in any tournament to date. Their consistency is summed up by the fact that from the 2003 World Cup onwards they have achieved the same results – two wins and two defeats.

This consistency is pretty handy when you’re looking at betting on Italian matches, as you can more often than not count on their results. Below we outline the most appropriate methods for placing wagers on the Italian rugby team.

Head-to-Head Betting

Italy are competitive in the Six Nations tournament, although that hasn’t stopped them from picking up a few wooden spoons – they finished in last place in 12 of their first 18 tournaments. For this reason, you will always see Italy as an outsider in the head-to-head market, even when playing in front of their home fans at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Italy have never beaten England in a competitive match and have poor records against Wales, France and Ireland. Scotland is their best matchup in the Six Nations, and even then their record isn’t amazing – the Azzurri have beaten the Scots in just under 30% of matches between the sides. The best advice here is to follow the tournament carefully – Italy play at the same level and rarely have good or bad games. Look for a team who is struggling against the other four nations as they will have a great chance of being defeated by the Italians.

Parlay Betting

Italy are a great candidate for parlay bets as you can always count on their fixtures to go to plan, win or loss. By picking head-to-head results across two or more matches, you increase your odds dramatically and will receive a much higher dividend than if you were to place individual bets on the same games. At the World Cup, Italy’s trend of two wins and two losses is always likely to continue – the team consistently dispatches the lower ranked teams and can’t find a way to beat the top teams. Why not place a bet on all four pool matches – two wins in the matches they are favoured to win and losses in the other two? Even if all four matches come in at odds of -600, you will end up with -117 – resulting in almost double your outlay.

Handicap Betting

While head-to-head bets on the Italians will give you great odds, the chances of them winning matches against the best nations are pretty minute. This is where handicap betting can be really useful. The sportsbook of your choice will set a line that represents the likely margin of victory, and you can choose whether or not Italy are a chance to get close to their opposition.

For example, Italy are playing in a match against Australia, a team that they have never beaten. The odds will be indicative of this fact – probably around -600 for Australia and +800 for Italy head-to-head. In this match, the handicap line may be set at -18.5 and offer odds of around -110. This means that if you bet on Italy, your wager would be payed if the Italians lose by less than 19 points.

Not a bad option! This also works when the Italians are heavy favourites, for example in a World Cup qualifying game against one of Europe’s lower ranked rugby nations. Italy are yet to fail to make it to a World Cup, so the odds and line above will probably be the same as above (yet reversed in Italy’s favour). In this case, you would be betting that Italy would win by 19pts or more.

Finally, the best sportsbooks will allow you to set your own line, which can result in a really decent payout. Italy’s best result in history was their 104-8 victory over the Czech Republic in 1994. It is almost a certainty that the line would have been around half the 96-point margin, possibly -44.5 with odds of -110. If you had taken a gamble that they would beat the line at -54.5, you would have received odds around +200.

Live Betting

Don’t forget that most betting companies allow you to bet live on international rugby matches, which presents a great opportunity to win money. The biggest tip we can give you here is to take note of all the pre-match odds and lines and refer back to these during the game.

For example if Italy’s handicap in a game against South Africa was +20.5 before the match and they go into the sheds at halftime only trailing by 3 points, the live handicap may shift to +12.5. The game is still likely to feature a margin of around 20 points as originally forecast, so be wary of backing the Italians to come within 12 points; jump on South Africa at -12.5 and watch the Springboks surge ahead late in the match.

Other Markets

If betting on the result of the match doesn’t interest you, why not have a go at some of the more exotic markets available. The most popular bets include the tryscorer lines, particularly the first tryscorer market, although as these are tough picks we recommend the ‘to score’ market which pays if your player scores at any time during the match. This is much more likely to pay and you will also be engaged for the whole match, not just until the first try is scored!
