CFL Week 8 Odds, Picks: Back The Stampeders To Keep Rolling Over Injury-Riddled Alouettes

Calgary Stampeders wide receiver Clark Barnes (14) reacts during the second half against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at McMahon Stadium.

We’re still a few weeks away from the start of the NFL season, but the CFL is a viable alternative for football bettors in the meantime.

The CFL Week 8 schedule will feature four games this week from Thursday through to Sunday, with the Montreal Alouettes and Calgary Stampeders kicking things off on Thursday. Edmonton will visit Saskatchewan on Friday, Toronto will host Winnipeg on Saturday, and Week 8 concludes with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats visiting the BC Lions on Sunday.

Montreal now has the shortest odds (around +250) in Grey Cup outrights, but Saskatchewan, Calgary, and Hamilton all have +400 odds or shorter heading into this week’s action.

Three CFL Week 8 picks

  • Stampeders -6.5 game spread: -118 @ PROLINE +. This spread opened at around -5 and now many online sportsbooks have moved it to the key number of 7 or even beyond as we inch closer to kickoff. Montreal’s starting quarterback, Davis Alexander, and top receiver, Tyson Philpot, will both miss this contest due to injuries, leaving the Alouettes in shambles offensively. Calgary, meanwhile, has been an incredible 5-1 against the spread this season while leading the CFL in several defensive categories. Back the Stampeders to keep on rolling and cover the spread on the road.
  • Tiger-Cats +3 spread: -116 @ NorthStar Bets. This spread has mostly sat at the key number of 2.5 across the board since it opened early this week, but now we’re beginning to see some 3s on the board at a few online sportsbooks. Hamilton enters this contest on a four-game winning streak and is averaging a whopping 35 points per game during that span with quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell leading the charge. Mitchell has thrown for over 250 yards in five of his six games this year, and while BC’s pass defence is among the best in the league, the Lions did give up 395 yards through the air to the Roughriders last week. This should be a very close game, and the Ticats should at least cover the three points as underdogs, if not win this one outright. Additionally, road teams are 16-10 against the spread (61.5% cover rate) overall this season.
  • Kenny Lawler anytime TD: -130 @ Sports Interaction. Lawler has simply been superb since joining the Ticats, hauling in at least one touchdown pass in five of the team’s six games for a total of eight this season. He’s hauled in 33 passes on 54 attempts for 644 yards to work himself into the Most Outstanding Player conversation, with some sportsbooks now listing his odds as short as +1400 to win the award, behind four quarterbacks, including Hamilton’s Mitchell. At -130, we’re still getting value (56.5% implied odds) on him finding the end zone in what should be a very high-scoring affair. Some sportsbooks have the total for this game as high as 56 points, and we’ll bet Lawler can score at least seven of them.
