NHL Weekend Picks & Predictions: December 20-22

We come into the Christmas weekend after a week of upsets and teams rising up to challenges, pulling off some great results.

This week won’t be one to remember for the Boston Bruins, who have fallen down the NHL power rankings, losing 4 of their last five games.

Who will take the points this weekend?

Pittsburgh Penguins (2.24) vs Edmonton Oilers (2.73)

The Oilers have been having a really tough time of late, they looked so sharp just a few weeks back but things have taken a turn for the worse. In the last 11 games, Edmonton have only managed to put up three wins.

The Oilers lost out in a Central Division tussle in their last. They were up against the reigning Stanley Cup holders, St Louis, but didn’t manage to get in the win column. The Blues now lead the Division.

James Neal continued his great season with the only goal for the visitors, assisted by the big German Draisaitl.

The Penguins are on for a 4th consecutive win in this one. They took wins over the Flames, Blue Jackets and a hard-fought win over the Kings, who beat the NHL league leaders, the Capitals, in their last.

The Oilers must bounce back at some point, they need to start putting things together and get their flying front 3 scoring again.

Take the Oilers to win here.

Tampa Bay Lightning (2.70) vs Washington Capitals (2.21)

Of all the games over the weekend, this will no doubt be the one to watch. An Atlantic vs Metropolitan Division matchup will see Washington face off against Tampa Bay in the Capital.

These two teams faced off last weekend, this being the second in the head-to-head series, with the Capitals dominating the game and taking the win in a 5-2 thriller.

But the very next game, the Capitals were shutout by Columbus losing the game 3-0. The Capitals will play New Jersey before this one and will hope to beat a struggling Devils team.

Tampa Bay go 17-12-3 outright for the season. They lost 4-3 against Dallas in their last, in an OT defeat. Tampa Bay have been strong this season, led in offense by Steven Stamkos (13 goals, 17 assists).

The NHL betting odds favour a Capitals win, and we tend to agree. The way they’ve played throughout the season has been excellent, a team with balance and that killer instinct to get wins when they need them.

Expect the Capitals to win at home.

Nashville Predators (3.05) vs Boston Bruins (2.06)

The Boston Bruins had become a team to fear in the league, but in the past week or so they have taken a U-turn. They sit on 21-7-8 outright.

The Preds will fancy themselves here, against the bookies odds, they could easily punish this Bruins side, who seem to have lost their rhythm.

David Pastrnak continues to lead the league’s goal scoring tables and they’ll need him to turn up again in this one. They lost 3-2 to the Islanders in their last, with Bjork and Krug picking up the goals for Boston.

The Islanders have been excellent of late, they are on 23-8-2 for the season. Mathew Barzal continues to lead the line for New York, putting up 14 goals and 14 assists for the 2019/20 campaign.

This game will be our NHL free pick for weekend, as we feel the Preds may turn the Bruins over. The Bruins desperately need to get back on track, but they are facing a vigorous Nashville team. We‘re backing the Bruins to get the win.

Take the Bruins to win this one.
