Opened in 1870, Pimlico Race Course is one of the oldest and most historic tracks in the US. Located in Baltimore, Maryland, Pimlico is most famous for hosting the Preakness Stakes, which is the second jewel of the Triple Crown. The track is owned by the Stronach group and hosts several high profile races on or around the Preakness which occurs on the third Saturday each May, two weeks after the Kentucky Derby.

In addition to the Preakness, Pimlico annually hosts the Grade 1 Black-Eyed Susan for three-year-old fillies the day before the big race. The structure mirrors that of the Kentucky Oaks/Kentucky Derby format at Churchill Downs. The track is also noted for hosting the Grade 2 Dixie Stakes on turf and Grade 2 Pimlico Special on the main track, both of which are run Preakness weekend for older horses.

Pimlico Race Track Picks

Among bettors, Pimlico’s main track is noted for its tight turns and propensity to favor horses with early speed. Interestingly, this angle often gets overplayed as horse players consider their selections for the Preakness Stakes. The track’s signature event is run at a mile and one-sixteenth, which means the distance itself is often too far for many of the sprinter/miler types of animals who invariably wind up in the field. As a general rule, the Preakness is an easier race to handicap than the Kentucky Derby as the fields tend to be smaller and many of the top competitors from the Derby opt to wait for the Belmont Stakes.

From 2006-2016, five Preakness winners won the race in gate-to-wire fashion and all but two winners competed in the Kentucky Derby. As the fields for the Blackeyed Susan, Preakness, Dixie and Pimlico Special shape up, check candasportsbetting.ca for free picks and previews. The Pick 4 and Pick 6 remain extremely popular wagers on Blackeyed Susan and Preakness Day with pools dictating large payouts on many occasions.

Pimlico Race Track Results

Famously, Pimlico was the site of the November 1, 19038 match race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral. The race was run before 43,000 fans and recreated in the movie Seabiscuit as the title character won the second ever Pimlico Special over his more fancied rival. Tragically, Pimlico also played host to the breakdown of undefeated Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro in 2006.

Tragically, Pimlico also played host to the breakdown of undefeated Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro in 2006. The powerful chestnut was heavily favored to win the race, but sustained a fractured leg in the first hundred yards out of the gate. Bernardini won the race and was eventually named champion three-year-old. Rachel Alexandra became the first filly to win the Preakness since 1915 with her 2009 triumph.
