Pandora Hughes takes a look at the 2021/22 Bundesliga in our exclusive betting preview.
The 2021/22 Bundesliga begins on August 13 and Bayern Munich will be bidding to win their tenth consecutive title after making it nine in a row last season. Can regular challengers RB Leipzig or Borussia Dortmund finally topple them? Is it possible that a new contender could emerge from the pack? Power up your 2021/22 Bundesliga betting with our exclusive betting guide.
Who Do Bettors Favor for the 2021/22 Bundesliga?
Bayern’s Bundesliga winning margin last year was a healthy 13 points, the same margin of success as they achieved in 2019-20. In fact, all bar one of their nine consecutive titles have been won by 10 points or more, with their only close call coming in 2018-19 when they confirmed victory on the final day of the season. So not surprisingly, bettors are wagering heavily on Bayern this time round.
Their closest challengers are perennial runners-up Borussia Dortmund, while RB Leipzig also have some support after finishing second last time. There are also indications of minor wagers on Borussia Monchengladbach, Bayer Leverkusen and top-four finishers Wolfsburg, but if the Bundesliga bettors are to be believed, this season will be a procession for the reigning champions.
Which Team will win the Bundesliga in 2021/22?
Such is Bayern’s dominance that almost nothing seems to derail their progress and the arrival of another new manager is not a big concern. Julian Nagelsmann will bring a new style of play that may take a while to ingrain, particularly as most of the first XI were involved in Euro 2020 action, but they should be able to adapt. The squad does look a little thinner this time round, with the departure of David Alaba, Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez, but shrewd loan business should resolve that.
Bayern will also be boosted by the state of their main rivals. Marco Rose is a solid appointment at Dortmund, but his high press style may not play to the strengths of some of the veterans in the squad and Jadon Sancho’s absence will be keenly felt, so RB Leipzig could be a better bet as the main challengers, thanks to the signing of goal ace Andre Silva and the return of Dominik Szoboszlai.
Which Team is a Good Wager to make the Bundesliga Top Four?
Dortmund have made the top four in six of the last seven seasons, while Leipzig have done so in four out of five, and both are on offer at cramped odds to do so again.
According to the Bundesliga betting, Monchengladbach, Leverkusen and Wolfsburg are the main contenders in the race for the top four, but of these three, Monchengladbach make the most immediate appeal. They ended last season in eighth, which was a major disappointment, but the news that Marco Rose was set to leave, which broke halfway through the campaign, may have caused that drop-off in performance levels.
With Rose gone, the club has recruited shrewdly, bringing in Adi Hutter, who did such an excellent job with Eintracht Frankfurt last season, guiding them to fifth in the table, just one point outside the top four. Their squad remains strong, and unlike some of their top-four rivals, they won’t have to contend with a European campaign this time round, so could be a shrewd bet for the top four.
Who will win the Bundesliga Golden Boot?
Bayern’s complete domination of the Bundesliga has been paralleled by the ascendancy of Robert Lewandowski in the Top Scorer table over the last nine years.
The legendary and dependable striker has won the Golden Boot in six of the last eight seasons and has been in the top two for each of the last nine. The last serious challenge to his supremacy came from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has long since left for the Premier League.
Dortmund’s Erling Haaland is a prolific scorer but was 14 goals behind Lewandowski last season, so has plenty of ground to make up, while Andre Silva is expected to have another strong season, after moving to Leipzig, but like Haaland, was way off the pace last season. With no dangerous new contender on the horizon, Lewandowski will be hard to pass.
Which Teams will be relegated from the Bundesliga?
With three teams out of 18 involved in relegation, the fight against the drop in the Bundesliga is fierce, and this time around, one team stands out as likely relegation candidates.
The two promoted sides, VFL Bochum and Greuther Furth are likely to attract a lot of betting action in this market, along with FC Koln, who had to come through a relegation play-off to avoid the drop but Arminia Bielefeld could be a shrewd choice in this market.
They narrowly avoided the relegation play-off last time round but were fortunate to do so and benefited from excellent goalkeeping and more than their share of good fortune. No Bielefeld player scored more than five goals in the campaign and their pre-season friendlies have offered little sign of encouragement under new coach Frank Kramer. The Blues could be in for a long, difficult season and could offer a touch of value in the Bundesliga relegation race.
