Best Bet to Win Super Bowl LVI: Green Bay’s Roster has Fewest Weaknesses
Thirteen weeks into the season, no team has played better overall football than the Green Bay Packers. The offence is efficient and balanced, ranking fifth in the NFL in expected points contributed at 103.78. Hate or love him, Aaron Rodgers is again having an MVP calibre season with 23 TDs and only four interceptions. The Packers have depth in the backfield with Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon.
The defence for the Packers is playing excellent this season. The Packers rank fifth in net yards per passing attempt (5.6), ninth in turnover percentage (14.3%), and third in missed tackles. That is without arguably their two best defensive players – Jair Alexander and Za’Darius Smith – who the Packers expect back before the end of the season.
As long as Rodgers is healthy and the Packers can fix the kicking game (to be fair, Mason Crosby is 30/33 on field goals in the playoffs), the Packers are the best bet to win the Super Bowl.
Biggest Challenger to Green Bay: Healthy Arizona has the Skill Positions Players to Beat Anyone
A few weeks ago, it felt like a couple of teams could be in this spot – but as we enter December its is the Cardinals and Buccaneers who are the biggest threats to Green Bay. We are going with the Cardinals over the Bucs as we like what they have accomplished this season, despite injuries to their two best offensive players.
The key for the Cardinals winning the Super Bowl is a healthy Kyler Murray. Murray – before his injury – was playing at an MVP level. He currently leads the NFL in competition percentage (72.7%), yards per attempt (8.9), and net yards per attempt (7.73). He was on pace before his injury for 4837 yards and 36 passing touchdowns, plus 300 yards and six touchdowns rushing.
The Cardinals also have an underappreciated defence this season. The Cardinals rank third in third-down conversion rate, sixth in red zone defence, second in passing touchdowns allowed, and fourth in points per game. If any “new” playoff team can make some noise in January and win the Super Bowl – it is Arizona.
Best Bet from the AFC: Buffalo is still the Best Super Bowl bet in the AFC
Even with a few head-scratchers this season (the Jaguars’ loss quickly comes to mind), when the Buffalo Bills are playing at their best – they are the class of the AFC this season. The keys for the Bills this season are Josh Allen and the defence.
While not quite at the MVP runner-up level he was at in 2020, Allen is still playing at an elite level in 2021. Allen is averaging over 300 passing+rushing yards this season to go with 28 total touchdowns in 11 games. He is completing nearly 67% of his passes and is well above average in advanced adjusted passing statistics such as net yards per attempt index and passer rating index.
The defence for the Bills has played as well, if not better than any unit in the NFL this season. The Bills rank first in first downs allowed, points allowed, and passing yards allowed, second in turnovers and fourth in third-down percentage. Even the pass rush, which ranks 25th in sacks, has the fifth-best pass rush win rate in the NFL.
We will learn a lot about the Bills over the next few weeks. They have the Patriots twice on the schedule – which will likely decide the winner of the AFC East. We are betting on the Bills in our Week 13 NFL betting preview – and have them as the best AFC team to bet will win Super Bowl LVI.
Best Underdog: San Francisco looking more like 2019 Team Every Week
If you are looking for underdog value to win Super Bowl LVI – the team to bet is the San Francisco 49ers. At the start of the season, the 49ers were amongst the favourites to win the Big Game. However, an early-season four-game losing streak had many doubting the 49ers.
Since Halloween, the 49ers are 4-1 and playing well on both sides of the ball. The key for the 49ers is they are running the ball well. During their current three-game winning streak, the 49ers have rushed for at least 156 yards in each game. The 2019 49ers (who reached the Super Bowl) went 7-1 in games when they rushed for at least 150 yards (including playoffs).
When they run the ball well, their defence is more effective as it forces teams to pass. The 49ers have only given up 300 passing yards once this season – and it was in a wacky Week 1 win against the Lions. If they can keep it up, the 49ers are the team no one wants to face in the playoffs.
