Notable NFL Futures Odds Movers After Week 1: Chargers, Packers Significantly Shorten Their Super Bowl Chances

Most sports betting experts will caution the public to not overreact to the outcomes of NFL Week 1 games, but that’s not stopping online sportsbooks from wildly fluctuating some of their NFL futures odds ahead of Week 2.

Let’s take a look at some of the biggest risers and fallers in Super Bowl and division odds at the conclusion of Week 1:

Notable risers

  • Green Bay Packers: +900 from +1200 to win the Super Bowl (all odds courtesy of BetMGM). The Packers claimed a dominant victory over a very good Detroit Lions team at Lambeau Field in their opener. They looked incredible on both sides of the ball, and their new prized acquisition, Micah Parsons, logged his first sack of the season while playing limited snaps. Green Bay has won 13 consecutive home openers, the longest such streak since the 1976-88 Miami Dolphins, and now it heads into another marquee showdown against Jayden Daniels and the upstart Washington Commanders in Week 2.
  • Los Angeles Chargers: +2000 from +2800. The Chargers were a trendy preseason pick to make the playoffs this season with around -130 odds, and they’re well on their way to accomplishing that goal after claiming a 27-21 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Brazil to open the season. Quarterback Justin Herbert looked electric, throwing for 318 yards and three touchdowns to outduel Patrick Mahomes to snap a seven-game skid against the powerhouse Chiefs, who have dominated the AFC for the past several seasons. Los Angeles is now a short -250 to make the playoffs after its unlikely victory over KC.
  • Indianapolis Colts: +8000 from +10000. Did we perhaps underestimate the Colts heading into the new season? Or, are the Miami Dolphins just going to be a horrific football team this season? Former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones looked like Superman, running for two scores and throwing for another to help Indy snap the NFL’s longest active opening-day winless streak at 11 games. The defence looked strong under new coordinator Lou Anarumo, holding Miami to just 43 yards in the first half while allowing just eight points in the contest. They’ll face a stiff test in Week 2 against the Denver Broncos, but for now, the Colts improved their odds to make the playoffs to +165 from +195.

Notable fallers

  • Detroit Lions: +1200 to +1700 to win the Super Bowl. They simply got their asses kicked at Lambeau Field in Week 1, but they’re still one of the best teams in the NFC. Shrewd bettors probably saw this loss coming, as the Lions were forced to promote new offensive and defensive coordinators at the end of last season after their previous duo landed head coaching jobs with new teams. They’ll look to get back on track in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears before a very tough matchup with the Ravens in Baltimore.
  • Kansas City Chiefs: +800 to +1200. A Week 1 loss to the Chargers has put the Chiefs in a very precarious position heading into a Super Bowl rematch with the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2. Could they start the season 0-2 and really set off the panic meter? It’s certainly possible, and if that’s enough, a Week 4 date with the Ravens is also lingering. We could see Kansas City’s Super Bowl futures odds get increasingly longer over the next couple weeks, but that could set up a lucrative buyback opportunity if you still believe in this Chiefs dynasty making another long playoff run.
  • Miami Dolphins: +8000 to +20000. Woah! Oddsmakers really didn’t like what they saw from the Dolphins in Week 1, and can you blame them? They were healthy, for once, and still got beat up by the Colts, leaving head coach Mike McDaniel in the hot seat already in the young season. Things could get ugly really fast in Miami, and to top things off, star wideout Tyreek Hill is making headlines for all the wrong reasons again with domestic assault rumours.
