WHERE IN NORTH AMERICA IS PUERTO RICO TRENDING MOST?

Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance didn’t just dominate the conversation. It also appears to have sparked real travel planning.

According to Expedia data shared with Billboard, flight searches for Puerto Rico jumped by around 245% in the days following the show.

That provides the big-picture spike. To see where that interest is coming from, Canada Sports Betting analyzed Puerto Rico and San Juan travel searches across U.S. locations (states and Washington, D.C.) and Canadian provinces. Each location was ranked by searches per 1M residents, allowing fair comparisons regardless of population size.

Key Findings

  • Washington, D.C. ranks No. 1 with 3,873 average monthly Puerto Rico + San Juan travel searches per 1M residents and a +44% weekly increase.
  • Georgia ranks last with 10 average monthly searches per 1M residents, an outlier likely driven by snapshot limitations rather than true demand given Atlanta’s hub role.
  • New Brunswick leads Canada on a per-capita basis with 434 average monthly searches per 1M residents.
  • Maine recorded the largest post–Super Bowl weekly increase at +227%.
  • North Dakota and Wyoming posted the steepest weekly declines at -100%, likely reflecting volatility in lower-volume markets.
  • The top 10 U.S. locations lean Northeast, while many of the lowest-ranked markets are in the West/Plains — and the 2024 election map breaks down as follows: 8 of the top 10 were Harris-won states, while 9 of the bottom 10 were Trump-won states (shown for context only, not as a ranking factor).

Note: 2024 election results are included as a light, exploratory context layer. They may reflect broader regional patterns, but they are not used in the rankings and do not imply political cause and effect.

Top 10 US States for Puerto Rico & San Juan Travel Searches

Puerto Rico travel demand is not evenly distributed. In some states, search activity shows up far more frequently relative to population size, suggesting Puerto Rico and San Juan are especially top of mind for travelers there.

The rankings below are based on combined average monthly travel searches for Puerto Rico and San Juan, standardized per 1M residents.

1. District of Columbia

(Total search interest: 3,873 per 1M | Weekly change: +44%)

Washington, D.C. ranks No. 1 in our dataset, with the strongest Puerto Rico + San Juan travel search interest per resident.

  • Puerto Rico searches (per 1M): 3,176
  • San Juan searches (per 1M): 698
  • Hispanic or Latino population (%): 12.6
  • Spanish speakers (%): 9.3
  • Puerto Rican population (%): 1.09
  • 2024 presidential winner: Democratic (Kamala Harris)

With search interest up +44% week over week, D.C. looks like one of the fastest-moving markets in this snapshot, suggesting Puerto Rico travel interest is rising quickly, not just high overall.

2. Connecticut

(Total search interest: 2,453 per 1M | Weekly change: -2%)

Connecticut ranks No. 2, with consistently high Puerto Rico + San Juan search interest per resident.

  • Puerto Rico searches (per 1M): 2,066
  • San Juan searches (per 1M): 387
  • Hispanic or Latino population (%): 19.2
  • Spanish speakers (%): 13.0
  • Puerto Rican population (%): 8.22

Even with a slight -2% weekly dip, Connecticut stays near the top, which suggests interest here is steady and established rather than driven by a short-term spike.

3. New Jersey

(Total search interest: 2,298 per 1M | Weekly change: +12%)

New Jersey ranks No. 3, showing strong Puerto Rico travel demand relative to its population size.

Maryland ranks No. 5, with strong per-capita Puerto Rico + San Juan search interest.

  • Puerto Rico searches (per 1M): 1,701

  • Spanish speakers (%): 10.1

Even without a weekly-change reading, Maryland’s per-capita total shows Puerto Rico travel searches are concentrated here compared with most states.

6. Delaware

With search interest up +28% week over week, Delaware stands out as one of the sharpest movers in the top 10.

7. Massachusetts

  • Hispanic or Latino population (%): 14.0
  • Spanish speakers (%): 9.9
  • Puerto Rican population (%): 4.63
  • 2024 presidential winner: Democratic (Kamala Harris)

The +18% weekly rise suggests Massachusetts is not only high on the list, but also trending upward in the latest snapshot.

8. Rhode Island

(Total search interest: 1,819 per 1M | Weekly change: +2%)

Rhode Island ranks No. 8, with Puerto Rico travel search interest that remains high for a small state.

  • Puerto Rico searches (per 1M): 1,536
  • San Juan searches (per 1M): 283
  • Hispanic or Latino population (%): 18.8
  • Spanish speakers (%): 14.2
  • Puerto Rican population (%): 4.40
  • 2024 presidential winner: Democratic (Kamala Harris)

Rhode Island’s +2% weekly change is modest, but the per-capita total stays strong, which points to steady, ongoing interest.

9. Florida

(Total search interest: 1,716 per 1M | Weekly change: +16%)

Florida ranks No. 9 and is the top performer among the biggest population states in the top 10.

  • Puerto Rico searches (per 1M): 1,445
  • San Juan searches (per 1M): 271
  • Hispanic or Latino population (%): 28.7
  • Spanish speakers (%): 23.4
  • Puerto Rican population (%): 5.57
  • 2024 presidential winner: Republican (Donald Trump)

With interest up +16% week over week, Florida looks like a major travel market where Puerto Rico demand is both high and accelerating.

10. Pennsylvania

(Total search interest: 1,671 per 1M | Weekly change: +14%)

Pennsylvania ranks No. 10, with Puerto Rico and San Juan searches appearing frequently relative to population size.

  • Puerto Rico searches (per 1M): 1,411
  • San Juan searches (per 1M): 260
  • Hispanic or Latino population (%): 9.4
  • Spanish speakers (%): 6.0
  • Puerto Rican population (%): 3.77
  • 2024 presidential winner: Republican (Donald Trump)

Pennsylvania’s +14% weekly increase suggests interest is climbing, even though its Spanish-speaking and Hispanic/Latino shares are lower than many states near the top.

The Other End of the List

At the bottom of the rankings, Puerto Rico and San Juan searches appear far less frequently per resident.

Lowest states by total search interest per 1M residents:

  • Georgia (10)
  • Alaska (449)
  • Montana (497)
  • Wyoming (522)
  • North Dakota (603)

Some of these results likely reflect geography and market size. States farther from major East Coast travel hubs often show lower Caribbean search volume in this snapshot.

Georgia stands out as an anomaly. Given Atlanta’s role as a major U.S. travel hub, the extremely low value is more likely a limitation of this specific search snapshot than a true lack of interest.

Fastest Movers in Search Interest

Beyond overall rankings, week-to-week changes highlight where travel planning is shifting most rapidly.

Fastest weekly increases

  • Maine (+227%)
  • Arkansas (+87%)
  • Oklahoma (+62%)
  • New Mexico (+54%)
  • District of Columbia (+44%)

Largest weekly drops

  • North Dakota (-100%)
  • Wyoming (-100%)
  • Nebraska (-58%)
  • West Virginia (-53%)
  • Mississippi (-72%)

Short-term drops do not necessarily indicate long-term demand changes and may reflect timing effects or smaller search volumes.

Top vs. Bottom Markets: What the Snapshot Suggests

In this snapshot, the top 10 skews Democratic: eight of the top 10 states were won by Harris in 2024 (with Florida and Pennsylvania as the two Trump-won exceptions). The bottom 10 skews Republican: nine of the bottom 10 were won by Trump (with Hawaii as the exception).

Practically, this looks like regional clustering more than anything else. Higher Puerto Rico travel interest is concentrated in Northeast and Mid-Atlantic markets. On the low end, the bottom 10 clusters across Mountain West and Upper Plains markets, with several Deep South/Appalachia states also near the bottom (plus Alaska and Hawaii).

As noted earlier, this election layer is included as a light, additional lens for readers and was not used in the rankings.

Canada Snapshot

Using the same per-capita methodology, Canada Sports Betting also examined Canadian provinces.

Top provinces for Puerto Rico and San Juan travel searches:

  • New Brunswick (434 avg monthly searches per 1M residents)
  • Ontario (216 avg monthly searches per 1M)
  • Prince Edward Island (156 avg monthly searches per 1M)
  • Nova Scotia (134 avg monthly searches per 1M)
  • British Columbia (115 avg monthly searches per 1M)

New Brunswick leads on a per-capita basis, while Ontario shows strong total volume due to population size. Atlantic provinces rank highly because search interest is more concentrated relative to population.

The cultural spark behind the search surge

Bad Bunny’s reach goes far beyond music. As one of Puerto Rico’s most visible global artists, his biggest performances often put Puerto Rican culture and Spanish-language artistry in front of massive audiences.

Super Bowl halftime shows can also act like a tourism trigger, sparking curiosity around the places and identities tied to the performer. In this case, the visibility of Puerto Rico during the broadcast may have nudged viewers from “that was a moment” to “maybe I should go,” which shows up quickly in travel searches.
