Alex Bregman is one of the top free agents available ahead of the 2026 MLB season after he opted out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox a few weeks ago, leaving the final two years and $80 million of the deal on the table.
The veteran third baseman is projected to earn a six-year, $160 million contract by MLB Trade Rumors and should be highly sought after by several teams in free agency this winter.

Alex Bregman next team predictions
It’s not surprising that Boston remains the frontrunner to retain Bregman’s services despite the third baseman opting out of his contract with the team. Bregman’s strong performance on the field last season and his role as a mentor to Boston’s young players on the squad have surely increased his market value heading into his age-32 season, so it’s not surprising that Bregman is seeking a longer term this time around in free agency. Bregman’s wife, Reagan Bregman, is attending a business program at Harvard University in Boston, which means his family likely wants to stay in town. Bregman has publicly stated multiple times that he loves playing for the Red Sox and wants to remain with the club. The only question is whether or not team ownership is willing to commit more dollars and a longer term to a player of Bregman’s age.
If Bregman doesn’t remain in Boston, there are several other suitors that make sense and that have value from a betting perspective.
The Philadelphia Phillies are an intriguing bet at +750 odds to land Bregman. Their starter at third base, Alec Bohm, is a free agent, and Bregman would be a considerable upgrade at the position for a team with World Series aspirations. Philadelphia’s roster is loaded with veteran talent, and the team has been on the cusp of World Series glory for the past few seasons, so it’s very likely the front office wants to strike now before its World Series window closes. They also have one of the most aggressive front office executives in baseball in President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski, who has been known to seek out top free agents and pursue high-profile trades in the past.
The Detroit Tigers (+475) are also a very logical destination for Bregman. Detroit heavily pursued Bregman last winter and was reportedly very close to a six-year deal until the Red Sox swooped in at the last minute and stole him away. If they were willing to offer him a six-year pact last offseason, they’re likely willing to table a similar offer this time around, especially with the team cementing itself as a serious World Series contender over the past couple of seasons. Detroit’s ace and arguably the best pitcher in baseball, Tarik Skubal, will be a free agent after the 2026 season, so the time to strike is now for the Tigers before they risk losing him in free agency.
