CFL Week 7 Odds, Picks: Target James Butler’s Rushing Yards Prop Vs. Roughriders

BC Lions running back James Butler (20) runs the ball defended by Edmonton Elks defensive back Devodric Bynum (16) during the first half at BC Place Stadium

It’s the slowest time of the year on the sports calendar, but the CFL is here to save us from boredom this week!

There are four games on the CFL Week 7 schedule, with the action beginning on Thursday night when the Toronto Argonauts visit the Montreal Alouettes. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will host the Calgary Stampeders on Friday, and the Saskatchewan Roughriders will visit the BC Lions on Saturday night. The Week 7 schedule will conclude on Sunday night in Ottawa when the Redblacks host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Roughriders, who suffered their first loss of the season in Week 6 against Calgary, are still the Grey Cup outright favourites with odds around +310 at most online sportsbooks heading into action this week.

Three CFL Week 7 picks

  • Tim White anytime TD: +160 @ Sports Interaction. Hamilton has the luxury of having one of the top receiving duos in the league in Kenny Lawler and White, and the team has taken full advantage through the first five games of the season. So far, Lawler has played Batman while White plays the role of Robin, but that script should flip for Sunday’s rematch with the Redblacks. Lawler caught two touchdown passes and racked up 95 receiving yards in Hamilton’s 23-20 win over Ottawa last week. With seven touchdowns in his first five games with Hamilton, you can bet the Redblacks will be scheming to ensure Lawler doesn’t burn them for a second week in a row, which should allow White to shine offensively. He was targeted 11 times by Hamilton quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell last Sunday but only hauled in four passes for 60 yards. And with Lawler’s anytime TD price around -150 this week, the value is with White to pick up the slack and find the back of the end zone this week.
  • Blue Bombers -3 spread: -110 @ Bet99. Winnipeg suffered an embarrassing 37-16 defeat to the Stampeders in Calgary back in Week 5 and will be out for revenge with home-field advantage in its favour this time around. The Bombers will also be coming off a bye week, which has given them extra time to rest up and game plan for how to attack the Stampeders this time around. Through six weeks of play, the Stampeders have allowed a league-low 16.6 offensive points per game and just five offensive touchdowns. Calgary’s defence also recorded a pair of pick-sixes against Zach Collaros just two weeks ago. However, the Stampeders, at 4-1 this season, have greatly outplayed their low expectations coming into the season. Most oddsmakers set their season win total at just 6.5 games, and some regression is very likely throughout the middle of the season. We’ll bet that regression begins this week with a very tough matchup in Winnipeg.
  • James Butler over 52.5 rushing yards: -114 @ FanDuel. Butler ran wild on the Elks in Week 6 for 171 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries, and he should carry some of that confidence into a tough matchup with the Roughriders. Butler is averaging over 100 yards from scrimmage per game, and the Roughriders have been susceptible against the run in their last two games, allowing 130 yards (to the Lions in Week 4) and 134, respectively, to the opposition. Overall, Saskatchewan is only allowing 80 rushing yards per game, which ranks second in the league behind Montreal, but recent form is more important to consider in this case. Butler, who ran for 123 yards on 17 carries against Saskatchewan in Week 4, should be able to amass at least 60 rushing yards in this contest at home.
