2022 Winter Olympics Betting; Canada Total Medals Betting Picks

The 2022 Winter Olympics are nearly upon us, and in this article, we look at the betting for how many medals Team Canada is likely to get at Beijing 2022. We will be looking at the spreads on total gold, and the overall medals total; and most importantly, we have our over and under betting picks!

Freestyle Skiing, Snowboarding, and Speed Skating look to represent Canada’s strongest medal prospects going into the 2022 games. Ice Hockey also represents a great opportunity, although the loss of the NHL men has significantly dented Team Canada’s chances there.

The long-time Canadian stronghold sports of figure skating and luge look likely to struggle to make a major impact this year.

While in curling, Canada will be looking to grab a medal of some sort after the men’s and women’s teams totally missed out 4 years ago. A mixed doubles gold did soften the blow a bit!

In the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Canada produced their best ever medals count at a Winter Olympic Games.

Back then, Team Canada brought home an outstanding 29 medals. The breakdown reads as follows:-

  • 11 Gold
  • 8 Silver
  • 10 Bronze

Unfortunately, that was such a good haul, it’s going to be very difficult to just match, never mind beat that record this time around.

Not only are Canada arguably weaker 4 years on, but Norway and the Russian Olympic Committee are stronger.

Canada still has star performers like Mikael Kingsbury and Laurent Dubreuil who are serious medal prospects.

But with the drop-off in standards in figure skating and luge, combined with the improvement of other nations, it’s going to be difficult to come close to Pyeongchang’s total.

Canada Total Gold Medals Spread

At the moment the total gold medal spread is set at 8.5. That means nine or more golds are needed for overs to win or zero to eight gold medals for under to win.

  • Over 8.5 Gold Medals – 1.90
  • Under 8.5 Gold Medals – 1.90

A brilliant 11 golds were won back in 2018, so for Under 8.5 to win here, a significant drop-off is required.

Although a very competitive event, Canada will be expecting to improve on their one curling gold from 2018. There is also the ladies Ice Hockey team, and Mikael Kingsbury, who are realistic gold prospects.

Can nine or more be beaten? I’m not sure it will.

Norway and ROC are looking particularly strong this year, and I’m sorry to say that I’m going to have to go for under 8.5 Canadian gold medals for my first pick.

Canada Total Medals Spread

In this market, 23 or more medals need to be won by Team Canada for Over 22.5 to win. While zero to 22 total medals need to be won for it to be under.

  • Over 22.5 Total Medals – 1.90
  • Under 22.5 Total Medals – 1.90

In figure skating and luge alone Canada could lose out on a huge six medals from 2018. Taking those six medals away from 2018, and if Canada could match the rest, they would still beat the spread.

Like with the golds, I don’t see Team Canada threatening their 2018 record haul. But fortunately, they don’t need to, to beat the spread.

With the lack of figure skating and luge medals already factored into the spread figure, I’m optimistic that the 23 medals needed can be reached.

The freestyle skiers and speed skaters are expected to be successful, and with confidence breeding a feel-good factor, I think a couple of bonus medals could be picked up in those disciplines.

Therefore I’m going for over 22.5 total medals for Team Canada as my second betting pick at 1.90 with PowerPlay.
