Del Mar Race Track Picks
The term “California speed” in horse racing is an appropriate term, as horses running in the Golden state generally show much more early speed than in any other racing jurisdiction in North America. This bit of information should prompt horse players to consider just how fast the early pace will be and how many horses are intent on making the front right out of the gate.
With many shippers from other racetracks coming in for the Del Mar meeting, horses that have shown speed elsewhere may not have a prayer of making the lead. Conversely, a stout closer coming in from another racing circuit may be flattered by the sheer amount of early speed in front of him and pack a powerful late punch.
Del Mar is generally considered a speed-favoring dirt strip while it is difficult to pull off a gate-to-wire performance on the turf. Of course, these are generalities and dependent upon the individual abilities of the horse relative to the field they are facing. The Pick 4 and Pick 6 wager are both wildly popular bets at Del Mar and feature large pool sizes particularly during the summer meet.

Beholder’s 2015 romp in the Pacific Classic signified the first win by a filly or mare in the event’s history. The champ took it to the boys to the tune of a nine-length victory and was tabbed as a serious threat to American Pharoah in the Breeders’ Cup Classic before being forced to scratch due to illness. Beholder returned to win the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Distaff by a nose in a thrilling finish over the previously unbeaten Songbird.
