How Tom Brady’s Retirement U-Turn Shook The Betting Markets

How Tom Brady's Retirement U-Turn Shook The Betting Markets

There was only one thing that shook up the NFL futures betting markets more than Tom Brady announced he was retiring, and that was when Brady himself tweeted that his retirement had lasted just 40 days and that he was coming back to spend one more season – at least that’s what he said – with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Yes, Brady – also known as the G.O.A.T in the NFL – went to Old Trafford to watch Manchester United play soccer, and shortly after meeting a fellow G.O.A.T in Ronaldo (okay, fans of Messi may disagree), the greatest ever quarterback announced he was no longer retired!

Slightly off-topic, but the parallels between Brady and Ronaldo in their respective sports are quite striking.

Both are supreme athletes who make looking after themselves their priority. Both men are in the latter years of their careers, but both look fit and able to go on for some time yet.

Quite simply, both are legendary elite athletes, and it’s quite telling that Brady seems to have sought Ronaldo’s opinion before announcing his decision to reverse his retirement.

So, what has Brady come out of retirement done to the odds to win the 2023 Super Bowl?

2023 Super Bowl Winner Betting Picks

In the latest Super Bowl winner betting odds, the Buccaneers are now 7.40 betting favourites with Sports Interaction. Before Brady announced his return, the 2002 and 2020 Super Bowl winners were a huge 28.00 to win their third title.

At the time Brady announced his return, those odds were immediately slashed to +800 second favourites, and now they have been further cut to 7.40 outright favourites.

Who is the Favorite to win the MVP Award in 2022/23?

Elsewhere, and another market completely turned on its head by Brady’s U-turn is the NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the regular season.

Unlike in the Super Bowl market, where the Buccaneers still had a presence, the MVP market originally didn’t cater to Brady’s inclusion.

From nowhere, Brady is now the third favourite at 9.38 to win his third MVP award. Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills is the 7.25 favourite, followed by Patrick Mahomes, who is 9.00.

There isn’t much between the elite quarterbacks in general though. Aaron Rodgers isn’t far behind Brady at odds of 10.00, while Justin Herbert is 11.00.

What about Conference Outright Markets?

The market that has seen the biggest shift in odds since Brady’s return is in the betting to win the NFC outright

Before Brady’s u-turn, Tampa Bay was fifth to win the NFC outright at odds of 16.00. Since Brady’s return, they’re now the 3.95 betting favourites

This is a huge shift in the betting, which has seen the Super Bowl defending champions ousted as betting favourites. The LA Rams are now 5.45-second-favourites to win the NFC Conference.

One market the Bucs were favourites in without Brady, was in the betting to win the NFC South. They’re still the favourites, but the odds have shifted significantly.

Without Brady, the Buccaneers were 2.45 to win the NFC South. With him? They are a measly 1.31

The presence of the great man makes a huge difference to any betting market. Tom Brady is a legend of the sport, and he would strengthen any side. This is despite the fact Brady will be 45-years-old when the new season starts

It can’t be certain that Brady’s presence will win the Bucs another Super Bowl. But what is certain is that they have a far better chance of glory with him in the team than they do without him.
