The pace of the 2021 Woodbine Mile should be modest. #1 Town Cruise set the pace in the King Edward (G2), the local prep for the race, and will likely be the Woodbine Mile pacesetter. he was run down late that day, and this time he will have even better horses chasing him. He is unlikely to take this gate to wire, but he is the one the rest will have to catch.
Most likely to catch him is #3 March to the Arch, who can get a nice trip in range. He did fall a length and a quarter short of catching Town Cruise in the King Edward, but he ran into some traffic and he will not have to be quite so far back this time. This consistent, classy horse can run a good race from a stalking spot, and he has a great chance to win the Woodbine Mile.
There is a great history of fillies and mares shining in the Woodbine Mile, and #6 Change of Control has a good chance to continue that story. A top female turf sprinter, she is already stakes-placed against male horses. She handled the one-turn seven furlongs of the Intercontinental (G3) at Belmont well, a positive sign for this one-turn mile. And, she is a sprinter with tactical speed, giving her every chance to be close up this time as well.
#8 Avie’s Flatter can also get a good trip in range. He ran fourth in the King Edward last out, but ran into some traffic that day. He, like March to the Arch, can win from closer to the pace than he was in the King Edward, and if he gets a trip like the one he got when winning the Connaught Cup (G2), he can move forward in this.
There are a lot of good horses in this race who will be coming from far back, including #2 Olympic Runner, #5 Set Piece, #7 Raging Bull, and #10 Space Traveller.
Among those, the most interesting are Space Traveller and Set Piece. Space Traveller gets Woodbine Mile-winning jockey Daniel Tudhope and should be very fit on the cut back from a mile and a quarter. Set Piece may be a little better going longer than this, but he is consistent against classy horses and does not need a collapse to get close.
The rest of the field includes #4 Ride a Comet and #9 Duke of Hazzard. Ride a Comet has some strong Woodbine turf form from earlier in his career but will have to find a career-best first off the layoff. Duke of Hazzard has been taking some underneath shares in G2 and G3 races in Europe. but has not won since the Celebration Mile (G2) two years ago.
