Originally scheduled for 2020, the delay for the Ryder Cup is finally over, with the best American and European golfers teeing off at the biennial event. The golf betting odds have the American side as the favourites against the Europeans, despite their shortcomings at the event the last twenty years.

Europe is the reigning champs, beating the American side 17½ to 10½. That gives them four wins at the last five Ryder Cups, and a seven to two record since the turn of the century. The American team brings back six players from their 2018 team – although it could drop to five if Koepka does not participate. Four of the five qualified players on the European side played on the team in 2018.

Who will win the 2021 Ryder Cup?

Europe’s recent string of success has much more to do with the guys not on the American team, than the roster they have assembled this year. Only two of the six guys with Ryder Cup experience have a losing record at the event. Dustin Johnson is 7-9 (43.8 winning percentage) and Bryson DeChambeau (0-3).

The other guys – Thomas, Koepka, Finau, and Spieth are all better than .500 at the event. Collectively, they are 17-10-3 – which equals a winning percentage of 65%. If they sub in Patrick Reed for Koepka, their record would improve – as Reed is 7-3-2 at the Ryder Cup.

Some of the rookies they added to the team are amongst the best golfers of the last year. Patrick Cantlay is coming into the tournament off winning the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Collin Morikawa won two Majors in the last year, while Xander Schauffele finished as the fifth-ranked golfer this season. Overall, it is a changing of the guard for the Americans and the best team they have fielded in a while.

Even with the European side having arguably the top golfer in the world – Jon Rahm – and Tommy Fleetwood the star of the 2018 Ryder Cup, we are betting on the USA to win.

Is There Any Value in Betting on a Draw?

Draws in golf do not happen outside of the Ryder Cup, the LPGA Tour’s Solheim Cup, and the President’s Cup. So, the opportunity to bet on a draw is an interesting endeavour. The question is, is it worth it?

Only twice in the history of the event has it ended in a draw. The first was in 1969 – when it was the United States vs. Great Britain (without Ireland). The second time was in 1989. That occurred during a  stretch of nine Ryder Cups where only one was decided by more than two points (ending in 1999 with a 14½ to 13½ win by the United States).

Since 1999, most Ryder Cups have been pretty lopsided. Six of the nine Ryder Cups have been decided by at least five points. Since both sides have top guys this year, a little juice is on a tie is a strategy to consider.
