Who is the Better Bet Between Gerwyn Price and Michael van Gerwen?
Entering the 2022 PDC World Championship, the top question on the mind of most bettors is who is the better bet – Gerwyn Price or Michael van Gerwen?
On one side, you have Gerwyn Price who leads the PDC Order of Merit – taking over the top spot from Michael van Gerwen after winning the 2021 World Championship. He added a third Grand Slam of Darts title in 2021, while also adding a runner-up at the 2021 World Grand Prix.
He is continuing to improve in his career, reaching third in the world in 2019 and 2020. A win at the World Championship would clinch him his first year-end number one ranking.
On the other side is Michael van Gerwen, who has been the best player in the world from 2014 to 2020. Michael van Gerwen is the second most accomplished player at the PDC World Championship – making five finals and winning three (2014, 2017, and 2019). The 2021 season has been a tougher one for van Gerwen who has no wins at televised events.
While a few wins at some lesser events are helping van Gerwen round back into form as we approach the World Championships, it is not enough. Price has been the better player this season. After averaging 100.08 in the 2021 World Championship, he has established himself and not let up through 2021. Take him to win the 2022 PDC World Championships.
Gary Anderson Offering Good Underdog to Win the World Championship
While he is not one of the massive underdogs (more on them in a minute) if you are looking at a middle-range betting pick take Gary Anderson. Anderson is one of the most accomplished players in darts, with the PDC World Championships one of his premier events.
Anderson has two PDC World Championship titles (2015 and 2016) to go with three more finals appearances (2011, 2017, and 2021). He is currently ranked sixth in the world – giving him nine rankings in the top-six since 2011.
Anderson’s talent and experience make him a great pick to win. No one has defended the title in the last five years. If Price cannot end that streak and van Gerwen continues to play subpar in 2021 – Anderson is someone to never count out of winning the tournament.
Fallon Sherrock is a Huge Longshot Worth a Small Wager
After a successful career in BDO (women’s division), Fallon Sherrock made the transition to the PDC in 2020. Early results were mixed – but notable for one accomplishment. Sherrock became the first woman to win a round at the PDC World Championship – surprising many to advance to the third round (in 2019).
The 2020 season was a bit disappointing – but chalk some of that up to challenges due to the pandemic. She has returned in 2021 and is only getting stronger throughout the season. She recently advanced to the Nordic Darts Masters – losing a close match (11-7) against Michael van Gerwen.
She followed up the performance with a strong showing at the 2021 Grand Slam of Darts. She advanced through the Group Stage and the Round of 16 to the Quarter-Finals. While she lost to eventual champ Peter Wright, her average score of 98.70 was the third-best of the round. The result helped her crack the top-100 in the world.
If you are looking for a significant underdog to sprinkle a bit of juice on, we are big fans of Fallon Sherrock. She continues to improve this season and held her own against some of the best players in the world.
