As many of the best tennis players in the world are in Canada and ready to compete in the 2021 National Bank Open, it is a great time as a Canadian to bet on and watch some tennis.
While it can be a challenge to agree on a name – the National Bank Open, the Canada Open, the tournament formerly known as the Rogers Cup – Canadians can agree on the cancellation of the tournament (second oldest tournament in the world) last year sucked. We are back this year, and to get you ready for the event, check out our 2021 National Bank Open Betting Picks.
Who is the Best Bet to Win the 2021 ATP National Bank Open
Although a couple of stars (most notably Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic) are absent this year, the field at the tournament is still strong. But who is the best bet to win the men’s side of the tournament – this year held in Toronto.

Best Bet to Win the 2021 ATP National Bank Open – Rafael Nadal
Although he is not the pre-tournament tennis odds favourite (that honour goes to Daniil Medvedev), Rafael Nadal’s experience and success at the tournament make him the best bet to win it in 2021. Nadal has won the last two Canada Opens – to give him five wins all-time in Canada.

Nadal’s record at the tournament over his career is 38-8 (equal to a .833 winning percentage). Excluding his first appearance in 2004 and a first-round exit in 2011, Nadal has made it to the third round every year he plays.
Nadal recently returned to the court – after a hiatus dating back to the 2021 French Open – at the 2021 Washington Open. Nadal looked healthy, making the Round of 16. These matches should help him compete in Toronto – and with a favourable side of the bracket, he has a great chance to make the National Bank Open Finals and pulling off his three-straight title.

Elina Svitolina History on Hard Court makes her a Great Bet to Win
The 2017 winner (back when it was named the Rogers Cup) plays is at her best on the hardcourt. Svitovina’s record on hard courts in her career is 223-112, including 18-7 this year. Her best year on the surface came in 2017 when she went 34-9.
At the last four Canada Opens, Svitolina made at least the third round, with a Semi-Finals appearance in 2018 her next best finish (after winning in 2017). Her overall record is 12-4 all-time at the event. Her draw this year is quite favourable. The biggest challenge she faces before the Semi-Finals is Petra Kvitova – who she has beat twice in 2021 (once on hard court, once on clay).
We cannot know who will make it to the Semi-Finals, but there is a good chance she is the best hard-court player remaining, making her a great bet to win.
Can a Canadian Win 2021 National Bank Open?
Canadian players always show up for the Canada Open. But can any players – on the women’s or men’s side win the event this year? We think so!

Denis Shapovalov the Best Canadian to Win the Men’s Singles Tournament
Although the tournament goes back to the 1800s in Canada and brings in the best tennis players from the country annually, the success of Canadian men at the tournament is virtually non-existent. Since the Open era began in 1968 – a Canadian has not won the men’s singles tournament. However, that could change in 2021, thanks to Denis Shapovalov.
Shapovalov – who is currently the tenth-ranked man in the world – is coming off his best performance at a Grand Slam. He made the Wimbledon Semi-Finals, playing Novak Djokovic to seven games in three straight sets in a tough loss.
He also has success against Rafael Nadal at the event. He bet the former world no. 1 in 2017 to advance to the semi-finals (what ranks as his best finish at the tournament). At 22, he continues to improve his game and will have the backing of the limited fans in attendance.
Shapovalov also gets a bye in the Round of 64 and cannot face Nadal until the Finals. We think if any Canadian male can end the drought, it is Denis.
Canadian Star Bianca Andreescu Can Repeat as the Champion
As the reigning champ (even if she won up 3-1 in the first set after Serena Williams retired), Bianca Andreescu is a fan favourite and a great bet to win the event. After a successful 2019, which included another win over Williams at the 2019 US Open Finals, Bianca dealt with plenty of injuries. However, she is looking much healthier as we progress through 2021.
Andreescu’s been playing well on hard courts this year. She is 9-3 overall in 2021, looking better the more she plays. She also has had plenty of time off this season, and with the rest and fans backing her, she can repeat as the tournament’s winner.
