The first one-day Classic of the new cycling season is this Saturday in Belgium, and here are our 2022 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Betting Picks.
The one-day specialists will be out in force in Ghent looking to secure their first win of the season. Wout Van Aert is the 4.50 favorite in the betting odds, with the Belgian looking to win his home Classic.
The 27-year-old’s all-around ability makes him the outstanding choice in a race of this type, where the riders will be challenged by a combination of short sharp hills and cobbled sections of road.
About Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
The Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is the first one-day Classic of the cycling season. Held in the Flemish Ardennes, the race takes place in one of European cycling’s heartlands.
With the Tour of UAE also finishing on Saturday, the Omloop may have lost its status as the official season opener.
Nonetheless, in this professional era, it’s still a race with plenty of gravitas, which the top riders want to have on their CV.
- Race; Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
- Distance; 204 KM
- Start; Ghent (Gent)
- When; February 26th, 2022
- Time; 4.45am
- Finish; Ninove
The race is essentially the same route as in 2021, with only a few minor changes. This year it has a combination of 13 climbs and nine cobbled sections.
And with a flat 12 kilometers to the finish line in Ninove, there is still the potential for a sprint finish.
But, with the hilly sections before the 12 km run-in, the likelihood is that if there is a sprint, it will be made up of a small breakaway group, as opposed to the whole peloton.

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Betting Odds
Belgian’s Wout Van Aert is the favorite in the betting odds. The Team Jumbo-Visma rider is just 4.50 to win. There is a significant gap between Van Aert. and the second favorite, Kasper Asgreen at 9.00.
After Asgreen is Britain’s Tom Pidcock at 11.00, and we again then see a larger gap to fourth favorite Yves Lampaert at 19.00.
There are then three riders all locked together on 21.00, Jasper Stuyven, Florian Senechal, and Sonny Colbrelli.
|Odds to win 2022 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad|
|Wout Van Aert||4.50||4.50|
|Greg Van Avermaet||67.00||67.00|
How to Bet on Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
The main betting line to bet on in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad race is the outright winner. As well as outright winner, to finish in the top three is also another extremely popular market.
To bet on these markets, please first pay a visit to our Sportsbooks Reviews 2022 page, where you will find the best betting bonus offers for new customers.
Using these offers to bet on cycling is of great value. This is because with such a huge and open field in a one-day cycling event, the odds to win are long – meaning we can hedge our bets and pick multiple winners.
Using betting bonuses to hedge our bets makes perfect sense, as it reduces our risk of financial loss.
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Betting Picks
Starting with the home favorite, let’s take a look at some value cycling betting picks.
Wout Van Aert Picks
Even with the short odds available on Van Aert, he can’t be ignored. This race is in his backyard. He’s from the Flanders region and knows this particular route well.
His all-around ability also suits this course, with its mixture of steep hills and cobbles.
My only slight concern with Van Aert is that he might not be going flat out to win this race. He may have his eyes on one of the bigger prizes later in the season, such as Milan-San Remo next month.
Nevertheless, he is still a hungry cyclist, and with no Mathieu van der Poel this year, Van Aert has an even stronger chance and therefore is one of my picks to win this race.

Tom Pidcock Picks
The young British rider announced his arrival on the scene last season by winning the 2021 Brabantse Pijl. He beat Van Aert into second place in doing so.
Supported by the might of the Ineos Grenadiers, Pidcock has already emerged as a leading name when it comes to the one-day cycling Classics.
At 11.00, Pidcock is of great value, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see him on the podium. The man from Leeds is young and hungry, and unlike Van Aert, may not want to hold himself back for the bigger-name races coming later in the Classics season.
Jasper Stuyven Picks
The absence of Mads Pedersen sees Jasper Stuyven as the sole leader of the Trek-Segafredo team in this year’s race.
This also gives the 2020 winner a much better chance of victory again, as he has the whole of his team’s race tactics focussed on getting him to the finish line in Ninove first.
At 21.00, Stuyven is a great value pick.
Greg Van Avermaet Picks
Even though the Belgian rider is 36 and in the twilight of his career, he is a one-day Classics specialist and has won this race in 2016 and 2017.
I wouldn’t be investing a lot, but at odds of 67.00 and using one of the many betting bonuses previously mentioned, the man nicknamed the King of Flanders might be worth a small bet to roll back the years and win.
