CFL: Tiger-Cats Cast As Solid 2021 Grey Cup Favourites

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats came up short in the 2019 Grey Cup. Hamilton lost 33-12 to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. After a season away from the field – the 2020 CFL season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic – the Ti-Cats are 3.94 favourites to win the CFL’s Grey Cup. The defending champion Blue Bombers are the fourth betting choice at odds of 6.19. Hamilton’s most recent Grey Cup win was in 1999.

2021 CFL Grey Cup Futures Picks

  • The 2021 CFL season officially opens August 5 with a 2019 Grey Cup rematch between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers
  • Hamilton is the 3.49 betting favourite to win the 2021 Grey Cup game
  • The COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of the entire 2020 CFL season

After a lost season, the CFL will pick up right where it left off as the league kicks off the 2021 regular season. The defending Grey Cup champion Winnipeg Blue Bombers will play host to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the regular-season kickoff on Thursday, August 5. It was Hamilton that Winnipeg toppled 33-12 to win the 2019 Grey Cup. That proved to be Winnipeg’s first CFL title since 1990. The entire 2020 CFL season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Blue Bombers haven’t won back-to-back Grey Cup championships since 1961-62 – oddly enough, both against the Tiger-Cats – but oddsmakers aren’t sold on there being a repeat performance in Winnipeg this season. It’s the Ti-Cats who are the 3.49 betting favourite to capture the 2021 Grey Cup. Hamilton is also seeking to end a lengthy Grey Cup drought. Canada’s Steel City hasn’t witnessed a CFL title since 1999.

Winnipeg is the fourth choice in the Grey Cup betting market at odds of 6.19.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Head coach Orlondo Steinauer’s Tiger-Cats fashioned a first-place finish in the East Division by playing stifling defence. Hamilton finished the regular season first in completion percentage allowed (61.9 percent) and also allowed the fewest passing touchdowns in the CFL (17) and permitted a league-low 19.1 points per game.

However, since 2019, SAM linebacker Rico Murray and shutdown cornerback Delvin Breaux both announced their retirements. Whether Hamilton can replace these two defensive studs will go a long way toward determining how far the Tiger-Cats go this season.

Calgary Stampeders

The Stamps are the most dominant Grey Cup presence in the CFL in recent seasons. Calgary has appeared in five Grey Cups since 2012. That includes three in a row from 2016-18.

Unfortunately, five key defensive players have departed since 2019. Tre Robertson, Wynton McManis and Nate Holley all moved south to the NFL. Cordarro Law was traded to the Toronto Argonauts and 11-season veteran Brandon Smith retired. That’s nearly half the defence in need of up replacing.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The Blue Bombers defied the odds to win their first Grey Cup game in 29 years. Winnipeg won a pair of road games in the West Division playoffs en route to the Grey Cup date against Hamilton. A middle-of-the-road defence rated fifth in the league, suddenly became stout during the postseason.

Offensively, quarterback Zach Collaros returns along with all five of his starting receivers – Darvin Adams, Rasheed Bailey, Kenny Lawler, Nic Demski and Drew Wolitarsky. Veteran running back Andrew Harris, the 2019 Grey Cup MVP, is also back.

Can the Bombers do it two seasons in a row? They won’t sneak up on anybody this year.

Saskatchewan Roughriders

Finishing first in the West, Saskatchewan won 13 games, the most by the team since 1970.

Quarterback Cody Fajardo is back to helm the league’s No. 1 offence. The Riders led the league in team passing efficiency (101.6), completion percentage (71.5 percent), and rushing touchdowns (26). Receiver Shaq Evans returns after leading the CFL in yards per catch (18.5) and 30-plus yard catches (15) in 2019.
