Matt’s CFL Week 3 Picks: Stampeders -1.5

If you’re looking for a moneymaking wager to include in your bet slip this Saturday, look no further than the Calgary Stampeders to cover the spread against the Ottawa Redblacks.

In a battle between undefeated and winless squads, this is a no-brainer bet to make on the CFL Week 3 action. The Stampeders have looked stellar in the early goings of the season, besting both the Argonauts and Ti-Cats by double digits to kickstart their 2025 campaign.

On the other side of this matchup, the Redblacks have been out of sorts early on this year. While they were able to hang tough against the Roughriders, they were absolutely shellacked by the Alouettes in Week 2. Bank on the Stampeders to go 3-0 both on the season, as well as against East Division teams as they make quick work of the Redblacks in front of their home crowd.

Matt’s 2025 Grey Cup Pick: Montreal Alouettes

Jun 6, 2025; Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Montreal Alouettes wide receiver Tyson Philpot (6) celebrates with teammate wide receiver Charleston Rambo (14) after scoring a touchdown against the Toronto Argonauts during the first half at Percival-Molson stadium.

Coming off a disappointing finish to their 2024 season, the Alouettes are primed to make their return to the Grey Cup, capturing their second championship in just three seasons. Sporting a sensational secondary unit, as well as a tremendous pass-rush, the Al’s defence is second-to-none.

Behind their top-tier defence, the Alouettes aren’t short on offensive firepower either, as they sport several star playmakers such as wide receivers Austin Mack and Tyler Snead. Currently favoured to win the 2025 Grey Cup, you can’t go wrong backing the Alouettes to claim their ninth championship in franchise history.

How to Read CFL Odds

Sportsbooks can display their odds in several different formats: decimal (3.25), fractional (3/1), and American (+225). American odds are most common. These odds work the same way across all betting markets and are an easy way to help bettors gauge value on each market.

In American odds, a favourite is represented by a minus sign (-) and an underdog is shown via a plus sign (+). For a favoured team, the odds number shows how much money needs to be wagered in order to profit $100. On the flip side, the underdog value shows how much profit can be won by wagering $100. You can, of course, bet any amount you’d like.

Example: If the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are favoured in a matchup against the BC Lions, the moneyline (outright winner) odds may look something like this.

  • Tiger-Cats (-120)
  • Lions (+100)

These odds indicate that a bet on the Ti-Cats (the favourite) to win would need to have a stake of $120 in order to profit $100. Meaning that if the Ti-Cats win, you’d get a total return of $220, which includes your original stake. But if you were to bet $100 on the Lions (the underdog), you would net a $100 profit for a total return of $200, which includes your original stake.

Jun 14, 2025; Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive back Tevaughn Campbell (26) knocks down a pass intended for Hamilton Tiger-Cats wide receiver Tim White (12) during the second half at Hamilton Stadium.

In order to bet on the CFL, you’ll first have to understand how CFL betting lines work. Let’s break it down, three-minute drill style, so you can secure the win over the oddsmaker on the gridiron!

🏈 CFL Opening Lines

An opening line in football is where the books set the odds for moneylines, spreads, and totals. Lines will change after the market starts to bet, and if there are noticeable injuries to key players on either side.

For example, when the opening lines are released at the beginning of a week, these odds will shift gradually as we approach kickoff. Odds can change due to an increased volume of public bets on one side of the tilt, or potentially due to injury, trade, or other lineup-changing events for either side of a clash.

🏈 CFL Moneyline Bets

As simple as it gets when it comes to CFL Vegas odds, moneyline bets are when you pick which team you think will win the game.

For example, if the Calgary Stampeders are playing the Saskatchewan Roughriders, you can bet on either squad to come out on top. Whether they win by one or 21 points, a win is a win in the CFL, and the same goes for your bet slip.

🏈 CFL Point Spreads

A point spread is a wager where you bet on how many points a team will win or lose by. The favourite (indicated by a minus sign) will need to win by a pre-determined amount. In contrast, the underdog (indicated by a plus sign) will need to either win outright or lose within a certain number of points of the lead in order to cover.

For example, let’s say you take the Toronto Argonauts to cover the -3.5 spread against the Ottawa Redblacks. This means that in order to win your point spread bet, the Argos will need to win the game by four points or more. Inversely, the Redblacks can cover the spread by winning the game or by losing within three points of the lead.

🏈 CFL Prop Bets

A prop bet is a wager on any specific event to transpire within a game. These bets extend beyond the norm of game lines, such as point spreads or totals, venturing into other wagers, including winning margin, first team to score, or player milestones.

For example, bettors can wager on the method of the first points scored in a game. Odds will be offered on touchdowns, field goals, safeties, and rouges. If you’re able to pick correctly, you’ll net yourself a juicy payday.

🏈 CFL Futures betting

CFL futures betting odds are exactly as they sound: you’re betting on an event that won’t be settled until down the road in the 2025 CFL season. Popular futures betting markets include the Grey Cup Winner, CFL MOP, and season series winners.

Bust out your crystal ball, take a trip to your local fortune teller, or even give your magic eight ball a shake, whatever it takes to get an advantage on your CFL futures betting predictions.

Jun 7, 2025; Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; BC Lions wide reciever Exechiel Tieide (80) tackles Edmonton Elks wide receiver Arkell Smith (86) during the second half at BC Place Stadium.

CFL Betting Odds: Tips & Strategies

📃 Look at Injury Reports

Before placing a bet on the CFL, be sure to check out the latest injury report available for both sides. If a key player, such as a starting quarterback, is set to be sidelined in their upcoming matchup, this could mean that the offence is going to struggle moving down the field. In this case, fading this injured squad could give your bet a winning edge.

Bettors can find CFL injury reports directly through the CFL and their teams through social media, their team sites, as well as insiders and reporters covering the league.

📈 Research Historical Trends

When crafting your CFL picks and parlays, a great way to find an advantage over the oddsmakers is by researching historical trends. Whether it’s how a particular player has performed in the past against a specific team or the head-to-head record between two opposing squads, this can all help you build out a winning wager on the action ahead.

🛑 Bet Responsibly

Lastly, if you’re going to have a positive experience betting on the CFL, you’ll need to follow responsible gambling practices. Each of the top online sportsbooks provides responsible gambling tools such as account limits (time, deposit, and losses) as well as the ability to set timeouts that lock your account temporarily.

Remember only to wager what you can afford to lose, and make sure to keep track of all your losses to avoid overspending.

How Does the CFL Differ From the NFL?

While both the NFL and CFL have rich league histories full of iconic moments and players, they do differ in several ways. Here are some of the main differences between the CFL and NFL.

Three-Down vs. Four-Down

For starters, the CFL has only three downs instead of four. When a team isn’t in desperation mode, it’ll try to get the first down during the first two downs. If it doesn’t convert and the idea of going for it on third down is too risky, teams will usually punt the ball away.

Since the CFL is a three-down league, most offences are pass-heavy. That’s not to say the running backs don’t get their time to shine, but you won’t see teams running the ball 25-30 times a game as you’ll usually see in the NFL.

An important thing to note is that just because there are not as many rushing attempts in the CFL, it doesn’t mean teams can’t push 80-120 rushing yards per game. The defensive matchups play a significant role in determining how well the running game performs against specific teams.

Field Size

An NFL field measures roughly 100 x 53 1/3 yards, with the midfield at the 50-yard line. But the people who created the CFL’s field said that bigger is better. That’s why the CFL field is 110 x 65 yards with the midfield line at 55 yards.

You might notice that certain CFL props are slightly inflated compared to ‘Murican football. The CFL’s field has more yards, which boosts props projections. Meaning that the books have to offer “stiffer lines.” But the lines aren’t actually stiffer. They’re just accounting for the bigger field that the CFL boasts.

The 12th Man is a Literal Thing

In the CFL, there’s a 12th player on the field. And, unlike the NFL, where the offenses and defenses line up literally inches from each other, both teams in the CFL have to line up a yard from each other.

When you’re monitoring a game and looking to make a live bet, with the idea that it’s a third and two, these guys will punt the ball. Teams in the CFL are much more likely to go for it on a third and two. If the O-line does its part, the QB or the RB should, more times than not, get that first down.

Number of Teams

Unlike the NFL, which has 32 teams, the CFL is a smaller league. In the CFL, there are only nine teams, four in the East Division and five in the West Division.
