Super Bowl First Touchdown History

Quick flashback to a more simpler time – SB 1 in 1967. Long before the prima-donna’s of today, who believe they are head and shoulders above the crowd, there was Max McGee. Under heavy duress from the Kansas City Chiefs defense, and pummelled as he released the ball in the pocket, legendary Green Bay QB Bart Starr threw a pass behind McGee. One Hall Of Fame star to another, Starr’s pass still had some gas but it was, in his own words, two-feet behind the intended target.

Said to be hungover, from night before fun, McGee snagged it with one hand and galloped into the end zone with the first ever Super Bowl touchdown. That Packers team was one of two that hoisted the real Vince Lombard. Ground shaking in its own moment – another 50 first TD’s have followed. From electrifying kick return TD’s and game changing turnovers, to one-yard plunges and majestic rainbow passes, 49 different players have scored the first TD of an NFL title game.

Decade of First TD Scores: Seven of the last ten Super Bowl Champions scored the first TD.

1st TD Scores Are Like Opinions All Super Bowls Have Them

Eclectic, based on who punched them in, how they were scored, when they were posted, plus their bearing on the final outcome, the first Super Bowl TD can be a chameleon. Whether showing the colors of a blowout, because they were produced so easily, or taking some time to unfold, due to both defenses showing their might, the first TD is either pace setting or just a bump in the road for the eventual winner. Via all modes, the “First 51” have covered 1,016 yards or 19.92 per score.

That said, they are often a notice of impending doom for the eventual runner-up. Numbers don’t lie and 37 teams have won the first 51 NFL Championships after they posted the games initial six points. Ranging from a 0-yard end zone fumble recovery – to a 93-yard “all for not” kickoff return, the first TD has been scored in the first quarter 29 times, a slightly surprising 19 first TD’s were in the second 15 minutes and a shocking three were long awaited and finally scored in frame three.

Five Pass, four Run, plus Malik Jackson’s fumble recovery TD have accounted for the past ten SB first majors. During their nine previous big game appearances, New England has scored the first TD four times (1 R, 2 P, 1 INT) and the Pats went 3-1 in those games. Pass plays account for five of the nine first scores but Tom Brady owns just two of them. TE L. J. Smith posted the first TD against the Patriots during SB 39 while Philadelphia allowed an Oakland TD pass early during SB 15.

While it’s tough to predict Devon Hester energizing the Planet with a 92 yard opening kickoff TD return, or an offensive juggernaut not scoring until the third quarter, researching the various “First TD Score” props can earn bettors some loot well before the final whistle. Avoid them at your local gas station lottery kiosk though. In addition to sporting less than attractive options and quantity, Sports Select “props” are three-way wagers and bettors have to make two other picks per ticket.

Don’t Pass On The Run: Penalties can place the ball at the 1-yard line = Rush TD needs respect.

52nd SB First TD 3-Bet: B. Cooks (+900) D. Lewis (+1000) R. Burkhead (+1600) @ Bodog

First Super Bowl LII Touchdown: Alshon Jeffery 34 YD Pass Nick Foles (2:34 1st)

How To Bet On First TD Props: Prices start at +425 for a Field of less involved players, edge up to +750 on TE Rob Gronkowski, flies up to Nick Foles (+3300) and peaks at +6600 on the unrealistic “No TD Scorer” option at Bodog. Since the prices are generous – taking three players can still earn a healthy return. Follow us here, on Twitter, or on our Facebook page for predictions and Super Bowl LII advice all week long.
