The Cards shut down Chicago's sweep attempt, the World Cup of Hockey offers up new details and the NFL begins a brand new season tonight in New England. Here's the brand new world of sports you're waking up to on September 10, 2015.

Did You Hear?

Put the brooms away, St. Louis has avoided the sweep. The NL Central leading Cardinals were in danger of losing three straight to the red hot Chicago Cubs, but managed to pull out a hard fought 4-3 result to collect their 50th home win of 2015. (By the way, St. Louis entered the game as a -130 favourite.) Down 3-2 in the 8th, the Cardinals battled back with RBI contact from Matt Carpenter and Stephen Piscotty. St. Louis will start a new series tonight in Cincinnati, while Chicago heads to Philadelphia to play the Phillies.

Cam Newton: Potential Aussie Rules Football Star? That’s the scenario presented in a brand new Gatorade ad that features the Carolina Panthers QB giving the sport a shot by training with the Richmond Tigers of the Australian Football League. Did You Know?

- A brand new National Football League season is finally upon us. The 2015 campaign begins with Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers going into Gillette Stadium to face the defending Super Bowl champions from New England. (The Steelers are a seven point underdog, by the way.) If you’ll take a peek at the Futures board, you’ll see that the Patriots are pegged as a 9/1 shot to repeat as champs this season. Who have oddsmakers considered the most likely Super Bowl champ come early 2016? That’d be Green Bay at 11/2. Other strong contenders according to the Futures board are Seattle (13/2), Philadelphia (17/2) and Indianapolis (17/2). Jacksonville and Tennessee have been pegged as the biggest Super Bowl longshots at 200/1.

- Speaking of the Super Bowl… Bruno Mars has reportedly been approached to serve as the halftime entertainment at Super Bowl 50. The rumblings have raised a few eyebrows largely because Mars performed just two Super Bowls ago at Super Bowl XLVIII.

- Additional details about next year’s World Cup of Hockey have tumbled out courtesy of a Wednesday press conference. Group A will feature Canada, U.S., Czech Republic and Team Europe, while Group B holds Russia, Finland, Sweden, Team North America (a.k.a. the YoungStars). Both the combo squads of Team Europe and Team North America have revealed their GMs as well. Miroslav Satan will helm decisions for Team Europe and the pairing of Stan Bowman and Peter Chiarelli will handle management duties for Team North America.
