Harry Kane: The Spurs’ Hurricane

The English Premier League is one of the most watched sporting competitions in the world, and as such the league attracts some of the best players from all over the globe. With such an influx of talent from the world’s best footballing nations, talented Englishman can often be forced to bide their time and watch on as foreign superstars steal the limelight. However, there are certain home-grown players that simply cannot be left out of even the top Premier League teams because they are pure class, and the best of the bunch at the moment is none other than Harry Kane.

Who Is Harry Kane?

Harry Kane is a young English striker who plays for Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League. Harry first joined Spurs as a youth player in 2004 and, although it is still early days, may well go down as one of the most successful youth products in the club’s history.

He made his senior debut in 2011 although spent much of his early years developing in loan stints at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich and Leicester City where he played alongside another young prodigy by the name of Jamie Vardy. There must have been something in the water…

Although still in his early twenties, Kane has already made 113 appearances for his club and 19 for his country. It is hard to believe that Harry Kane is coming off just his third consecutive full season for Tottenham Hotspur, such is the impact he has made at the club.

It is difficult to imagine the team without him, and certainly difficult to see a competitive Spurs outfit without him leading the line. Without Kane, it could be argued that Tottenham would have struggled to reach the heights of the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons in which they finished third and second respectively. As a striker, it is easy to measure Kane’s impact at the club and indeed in the Premier League by the number of times he has hit the back of the net.

Kane’s record and goals-to-games ratio is absolutely phenomenal and puts him up on a pedestal with some of the greatest names in the history of the English first division. Harry has scored an incredible 78 goals from his 116 top flight appearances which equates to a 67% strike rate – only the great Thierry Henry and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero boast higher ratios of players who have scored more than 70 goals in England’s highest league. Harry Kane is absolutely pivotal to the success of Tottenham Hotspur and the club will have to do their best to keep their star man.

Spurs fans will no doubt recall that after Gareth Bale’s sensational 2012-13 season in which he absolutely blitzed the league, he was promptly on his way to chase glory at Real Madrid. You get the feeling, however, that Tottenham are on the cusp of something extraordinary and are now close to establishing themselves permanently in the Champions League.

If they can keep moving forward and if Harry Kane can keep banging in the goals at record pace, there is no question that they can become a European force in the near future.

EPL Highest Goal Scorer

Harry Kane’s goalscoring feats are sensational, although where does he stand on the list of all time English Premier League marksman? In terms of pure goals, he has a long way to go to match the amazing record of the great Alan Shearer, who managed 283 goals from a whopping 559 appearances. His goalscoring ratio is 51%, so Harry is ahead in that respect, but it will take a lot of hard work (and luck with injuries) if Kane is to challenge that mark.

His next goal will be to push for 100 in the Premier League, which will be achievable in the 2017-18 season if he continues at his current rate. Putting incredible and distant records to one side, Harry Kane has already achieved what many of the best strikers in England never could.

The 2016-17 season saw Kane receive his second consecutive Golden Boot award, and he couldn’t have finished the season off any more emphatically as he scored seven goals in the final two games against Leicester City and Hull City. He was the first player to win the award for Spurs since Terry Sheringham back in the 1992/93 season and joins other great names Robin van Persie, Thierry Henry and Shearer as the only players to win back to back awards in the Premier League era.

Possibly the most astonishing statistic out of all Harry’s goalscoring feats is his ratio in the 2016-17 season. Kane only appeared in 30/38 games in the campaign and managed to score 29 goals. If he was fit and available for every match he may well have come close to the all time English Premier League record – 34 goals set by Andy Cole and repeated by Alan Shearer in the early 90’s.

While I’m sure Kane would tell you that individual accolades are a distant second when compared to the chance of winning a Premier League or even Champions League trophy, it is undeniable that his records will be career-defining when he eventually hangs up the boots.
