World Champions and four-time champions Germany will once again start as favourites when they take on fellow Europeans Sweden, although for the first time in memory the Germans will face elimination from the tournament if they are to lose. Sweden are in a great position to capitalise, although it’s hard to see the number-one team losing twice in a row.
Germany were favourites to top Group F, and may still be able to achieve this feat if they overcome a Swedish side that has proven quite difficult to dispatch over the last two years. Sweden managed to qualify ahead of the Netherlands, and also knocked out Italy on their road to the World Cup, and will certainly be looking to employ the same tactics against the world-class Germans.
This match is very important for both sides. Sweden will know that a point or more here would do wonders ahead of their final match against Mexico, while Germany will know that a win will make their lives much easier ahead of their clash with Korea Republic.
There is a good chance we will see goals in this match. Germany crushed their qualification opponents on their way to achieving 43 goals in their ten matches, while Sweden too were the top scorers in their group, ahead of both the Netherlands and France. Emil Forsberg will be the key for the Swedes – he is one of the best strikers in the Bundesliga at the moment and will bring plenty of inside knowledge into the Swedish camp.
They will still have their work cut out against easily the best team in the world. Germany have ridiculous depth right now, and it’s been well publicised that they won the 2017 Confederations Cup with what could be best described as a youth squad. With Thomas Muller, Toni Kroos and company leading the way, it’s looking like the Germans will again be too strong here.
Germany start at -249, which is definitely the best value on offer for their three group stage matches. The draw is available at +372, while a Swedish upset victory is paying +649. This match will certainly be closer than the majority of matches the Germans are involved in, but we think they will still be good enough for all three points. Our prediction is a 2-1 victory to the defending champions.
