Bet On Edmonton Oilers Games
First established as a founding member of the 12-team World Hockey Association, in 1971 as the Alberta Oilers, the Edmonton Oilers were officially established in 1973. The WHA proved to be a huge headache for the NHL as they were snapping up star players like Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and Wayne Gretzky as well as territory the NHL was eyeing for future expansion. After one of the most bitter feuds in sports history, that included striking beer drinkers and threats of violence, the NHL and WHA merged prior to the start of the 1979-80 season. Four WHA franchises (Oilers, Jets, Nordiques and Whalers) advanced to the big league and the Wayne Gretzky NHL era blossomed.
Despite struggling to a 57-74-29 mark over their first two seasons, Edmonton was about to unleash a tsunami on the NHL – that wave began in 1981. Nine years later, once the Oilers had rolled over everyone in their path, Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey & Crew had claimed five Stanley Cup Championships. Second seasons were plentiful from 1991 to 2006 but Stanley was a stranger in the Alberta Capital as the Oilers made one Cup Final appearance (2005-06) during those fifteen years. A drought would ensue however as the Oilers missed the NHL playoffs from 2007 to 2016 before All-Star super-sophomore Connor McDavid led the Oilers back to postseason prominence in 2017.
